Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe

Monte Cristo Sandwiches were requested by my Mom one weekend. The only times I’ve had Monte Cristo sandwiches were in restaurants. I haven’t had one in a long time AND I’ve never made one, so I excitedly took on the challenge!

Read on for the recipe!
A Monte Cristo sandwich is like the love child of French Toast and a ham & cheese sandwich. I’m serious! You’ve got the slightly soggy texture of a French toast, and the meaty, cheesy filling of a ham & cheese. It’s so delicious and simple to put together.

Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe

Ingredients:
6 slices of bread
6 slices of cheese (I used Eden Slices)
6 slices of cooked ham (I used Christmas Ham)
3 eggs
1/2 cup milk
Mayonnaise
Butter

Let’s get started!
What to do:
1. Lay out 6 slices of bread and spread with mayonnaise. Top each slice with 1 slice of cheese and 1 slice of ham each. Get one slice of bread then, and flip it onto another piece. You’ll end up with 3 thick sandwiches. Set aside.

2. Combine the eggs and milk in a bowl. Set aside.

3. Heat the butter in a pan over medium heat. Get one sandwich and dip it in the egg batter, coating it evenly. Gently place on the pan, fry, turning once until golden brown. This will take about 4-6 minutes per sandwich.

4. Cut the Monte Cristo in half diagonally, then transfer to a serving plate. Serve hot.

Ready to eat!
I cooked this for breakfast and my family enjoyed it! The sandwiches were quite filling and very tasty. I love how the cheese melted onto the ham, and best of all, how spongey the bread was. I’m a big French Toast lover!

A bite into the Monte Cristo
You can eat the Monte Cristo on its own. You can also choose to complement the salty taste profile of ham and cheese with something sweet — a dusting of confectioner’s sugar, or a spoonful of jam on top. No need to go to restaurants for a Monte Cristo sandwich — you can totally do it on your own! :)
