Morning Quiet

by

There is a lull in the day that I particularly enjoy. It’s not the pause that comes from a busy day. It’s not the afternoon slowdown as we move on to siesta. It’s the quiet that comes upon waking up, the happy silence shared between father, mother and son, as they relish the tangle of blankets and pillows around them. It’s the morning quiet.

My son enjoying his morning quiet time.

It’s that moment when you open your eyes and see your loved ones still deep in slumber, and you just gaze at their long eyelashes, listen to their calm breathing, then say a prayer of thanks. Thanks for another day, another morning, another chance to enjoy more of life with these precious ones.

It’s the moment when you’re sure you don’t want to get out of bed, not because you’re lazy, but because there’s peace in the sheets that envelop you. It’s the bridge between waking up from a dream and getting started on reality. And so you just lay there, feeling the energy of the day flow through your arms and legs, until quietly, peacefully, you get up and start the day.

The morning quiet is when my husband and I share quiet whispers, over our son’s sleeping head mostly. We whisper, “Look how big he’s grown!” “He’s not a baby anymore!” “He looks so much like you.”

I wake up to a kiss sometimes. It is from my son, waking up ahead of me and enjoying his own morning quiet. I’ve taken a peek several times. He’d open his eyes slowly, stretch his arms and legs, sit up to scan the room, then upon seeing me beside him, would snuggle close to me and give me a kiss. “Good morning, Mommy!,” he would say. It’s beautiful to wake up to your son’s kisses, a beautiful way to begin enjoying the morning quiet.

The morning quiet involves hugs, cuddles, snuggles, whispers. There are giggles too, but tame little ones, not full blown laughter.

When we’ve had the energy to sit up, I’d reach for a book or a morning journal. My husband would reach for his phone to read the news. My boy would get his toys and begin tinkering in bed. We’re easing into the day in our own way, but together. It’s a beautiful way to enjoy the morning quiet.

It is the lull in the day I enjoy the most — a moment of possibilities, a moment of pondering, a moment of quiet love. It is the morning quiet.

What a beautiful way of describing your beautiful mornings. I like mornings too but I also love late afternoons. That’s my favorite time of the day.

Oh, how beautiful, Toni! I love how you welcome the morning together. I hope my family and I could do that. We are always out of the bed almost right away.
