Memories of School

I wonder sometimes about how future generations will look back on their high school days. It’s becoming more acceptable to attend school online, and many organizations, such as Virtual High School, make online high school courses available. Learning from the home may be convenient, but a lot of important life experiences come from attending school with others. This trend is already well-established at colleges, as you can tell from the online degree choosing tools at Top Online Colleges.

I visited my old school last summer. A wave of nostalgia hit me as I walked through the old halls and came upon old swings and slides, the same stairs, the huge social hall and of course, the mushroom tables.

Mushroom Tables
I’m sure lots of schoolgirl secrets have been spilled over these tables!

I don’t miss the exams and the cramming. I do miss bonding with classmates and school fairs. I miss the lunch bell and running off with my barkada to our regular lunch area, armed with our lunch boxes and a Coleman each. I miss my old English teachers, but I don’t miss some of the other teachers who will remain unnamed (hehehe). I miss the canteen’s banana cake and the staff giving you change in candies instead of coins.

As I walked through the halls, I suddenly felt very old. But at the same time, I felt very blessed with the richness of memories my old school has given me.

Someday when I have daughters I’d like to enroll them in my alma mater. I trust their system and their educators. It’d also be good fun watching the young ones go in and out of the same classrooms I stayed in, run across the same field I played in. And who knows, maybe we’ll share a secret or two over the same mushroom tables. I’ll then add it to my pot of sentiments, making my school memories even richer.

Hi Toni! this is weird…I was thinking of my old school just last night, recalling the good and bad times.
I hope like you, I get the chance to visit it, someday.
Take care Toni, and have a fine weekend.

me too, just enrolled my daughter in my alma mater. at the end of the orientation, they played the school song, and memorized ko pa rin!!! hubby was very amused hehe.

weirdly enough, i still felt a little scared when i saw some of my old school teachers (imagine, they were still there?!), hahaha.

Oh no, it’s Blessed Arnold Jansen again, heheheh! They changed the playground, didn’t they? Is it just my imagination or are there more mushroom tables than usual?
It would be cool to go back to Holy, as well. I think of all the time I spent sulking in the library or bitching about how to get out of the gates during School Fairs, hahhaa!
Btw, Toni! What was the name again of the little resto just outside the main gate of Holy? Where they sell the grilled cheese sandwiches? Is it still around?

    Hi Toni,

Can this be Holy Ghost? If so, are there two of them now? I went to the one on Mendiola half a century ago. Can it be that long ago? We are celebrating our 50th reunion next February; perhaps I will go. Always enjoy your blog. Makes me smile. Take great care,

i miss buying school supplies. next to household cleaners, this is another quirk of mine. i could just linger in school supplies section, especially when the items are all spread out. oooooh, heaven.

Para ngang dumami ang mushroom tables. Hehe. 😉 I studied in SHS also– loyalty awardee! Hehe. I was Patti’s batchmate in grade school and Jennie’s clubmate during her first year (HS Glee Club). I love how you write and I love that you’re such a positive person. Reading your entries always makes me smile. Take care always, (Ate) Toni! God bless you. :)
