Give Your Kid a Camera

by

Give your kid a camera. You’ll be surprised at how he sees the world! I tried this exercise two years ago with Timmy, and then earlier again this week. He’s been very handy with my iPhone anyway and has taken many pictures of his toys. So when I told him that he could take my iPhone around the house and “officially” take pictures, he was super game for it!

Here’s what he came up with:

Give your kid a camera

Timmy’s Pictures. Of course, Mommy has to be one of his subjects! ;-)

I loved looking through the pics in my phone when he was done. I enjoyed discovering his perspective on things — a top shot of his favorite bear (wearing his old pajama set), the details of his favorite jacket, a pair of his slippers (which I totally didn’t expect), even how he sees me (right smack at the center of the frame).

This was a fun exercise and I’ll ask him to do this again. Perhaps in family get-togethers, when we go on outdoor walks, when we’re in the car. I’d love to see the world as he does. I’d love to discover what he feels should be a close-up and what he feels should be framed a certain way.

After taking the pictures, I asked why he took pics of some of the items. His answers were funny.

“Why’d you take a picture your slippers?” “Because they’re my green outdoor slippers.”

“Why’d you take a picture of Hulk?” “Because Hulk said ‘cheese’!”

“Why’d you take a picture of your bear?” “Because the bear said ‘cheese’!”

“Why’d you take a picture of your bookshelf?” “Because there are so many books.”

Some of his answers had the tone of “C’mon Mommy, common sense, duhhhhh.” Hahaha.

Give your kid a camera and see what you’ll get! You’ll be surprised at the way they capture items we adults tend to overlook. It’d be great to see things through their eyes. :)
