Yummy!

I first learned about this new local food magazine from Petite. The cover page design excited me. It didn’t have elegantly plated food on its cover, nor did its magazine name have a font in flowing letters. The mag looked simple and homey. I was immediately taken with it.

Upon getting the March and April issues, I immediately tore open the plastic wrapping and devoured the articles. The food photography was excellent. Can you say food porn? The articles were very interesting and well-written. The recipes were friendly and encouraging. That the recipes are simple enough to follow but still not typical are highly important to me. Ingredients are not hard to find. Perfect for amateurs.

What I love most about Yummy is its encouraging simplicity. The mood and tone of the mag is very friendly and informal, unlike other food mags I’ve come across. When I read those other food mags, I feel like I need to have had professional culinary background. The recipes get quite complicated, and even their food presentation looks like something out of a highly classy restaurant. Quite intimidating. I’m no chef, folks! I’m just a regular lady trying to put a meal together in my cramped kitchen!

I haven’t quite gotten comfortable in the kitchen just yet, but Yummy definitely has me excited to get my cooking groove back. I have only one suggestion to the folks at Yummy: Tear-out recipe cards. This is a magazine I’d want to carry all the time. Who knows when you’d get an impulse to try their recipes? I’d definitely tuck those tear-out cards in my purse.

See a sampler of the magazine on their site, and check out some of their recipes online.

Like you, I go for simple, undaunting recipes. If I see that it’s too complicated, I don’t even attempt! That’s why I don’t bake haha! Will definitely get a copy of this Yummy mag.

Bridget: Naks! Post a pic of yourself in an apron… only an apron. Hehehe. Wag nalang, baka magalit si Papa Jher.

Tito Rolly: I love that it’s not as intimidating as the usual food mags. Wonderful for non-pros. 😉

Zita: I’ve inquired about the availability of their magazine overseas. Will get back to you when I get a reply. 😉 And yup MM’s featured! It was a wonderfully written article, and MM’s dishes were just mouthwatering. I don’t think I can cook them the way he did, so I’ll settle with eyeing the pictures hungrily nalang, hahaha.

Miss B: You’re right! There are similarities. Both are simple but very enticing indeed.

Jojo: Hahahahaha dapat isubmit ni Meeya ang buco pandan recipe nya dito. Tiyak na pagkakaguluhan… internationally pa!

Chateau: I don’t bake either. I get in trouble with baking as it requires very precise measures and actions. I just dive in when I cook and pay measuring no heed. I let my senses lead me. It’s a hazard to baking but not to regular cooking. And that is why I like cooking mostly stir-fried foods. Hahaha.

Looks like a very interesting magazine. The cover by itself makes me want to flip over the pages.

BTW, I nominated you on my blog but I’m still in the process of writing it as of the moment. I’ll post it in a while.

    Have a lovely day Toni.

Pia: You’re right! Yup, it does have the same down-to-earth tone as Rachael Ray’s magazine, and the simplicity of Martha Stewart’s Everyday Food. That combination makes it an even more interesting read.

junnie: I hope it lasts long too! I don’t really read local food magazines, but I’m making an exception for this one. Let’s hope it’s successful!

My husband got me a copy of Yummy. Although the layout is nice, I have seen better magazines (i.e., Martha Stewart Living, for example). For me, the featured recipes do not give new ideas to homemakers. The recipes are not unique and do not pose a challenge to readers (e.g., bolognese, white sauce, cordon bleu, chicken ala kiev, buco pandan, leche flan, etc.). I actually encountered better versions of these recipes in the internet and other cookbooks. Yummy will be a good magazine, though, for people who wish to learn the basics of cooking but if one has the basics down pat, it won’t be much of a new experience. I liked the feature on marketman, though.

cathy: Compared to local food mags, I think the layout is refreshing! On content, you are correct that the recipes are quite basic and simple. That was precisely why it appealed to me, a cooking amateur. 😉 Would you mind if I share your comment with a contact from Yummy? I believe it will greatly help them.
