Siniguelas

One Siniguelas! Two Siniguelas!

When I was a kid, I remember getting mixed emotions whenever a huge bowl of siniguelas would be placed on the dining table.

First, excitement. Summer is the siniguelas’ chosen season. I remember feeling giddy when I’d see the green and purple fruits. Yahoo! Summer vacation pa rin! It was time to visit family in the province! It was still okay to wake up late!

Second, anxiety. We’d usually get bunches of siniguelas during the month of May. This meant that it was only a month till school starts again. This meant my summer vacation time was limited. This meant that I had to make the most of the remaining days of my summer.

Until this day, whenever I’d see those purple and green fruits, those emotions would come to me. Yey, it’s summer! And even though I no longer study, a little anxiety still sneaks up on me. Perhaps it is my reminder that I have just a little more time to enjoy the summer. True enough, summertime is almost over and I still haven’t done anything summer-y like go to the beach.

And so with every bite into the juicy yellow flesh of siniguelas, I relish what is left of the summer days and take note of the little siniguelas taunting me in a sing-song voice, “Summer’s almost over! Summer’s almost over!” I silence them all with my munching. Heehee.

My summer fruit is manga. Cause ever since I was a kid, I’d make mango ice candy whenever summer came around. Kaso this summer, because of work, I wasn’t able to make any. *sob sob sob* Maybe maki-summer memories na lang ako with you by buying a big bag of siniguelas XD

We were just talking about it yesterday over breakfast. My MIL was saying that I should teach my kids to appreciate the same things we used to enjoy during summer back in the day. Kasama na yang sineguelas. Yep, it brings back all those memories. :)

Ode to the siniguelas, hehehe. Summer is definitely over. My ultimate summer fruit is mango, though. Yum!

I love juicy siniguelas with rock salt! YUM!!! It’s sad that you associate them with the end of summer though.

    Oh My God Toni!!

I so miss this fruit – couldn’t get it here in Oz.. 16 years na akong nag-ke crave.

oh man, I used to eat it in a number of ways.

    1. green ones na matigas, crunch and eat as is.
    2. green ones na matigas, peel, eat the peel by itself, tapos eat the rest
    3. purple green ones na malambot na, eat as is, with asin or without or bagoong.

waaaaaaaaaaaaaa.. I’m sad na, so want to come back there soon and eat this all day. including Indian Mango and santol and lansones.. those are my summer fruits noon and pakwan.
