Twilight movie thoughts

by

Seeing your favorite fictional characters from a book come to life in a movie is magical. The first time Edward Cullen appeared on-screen, I couldn’t help but give a silent squeal. I think I squeezed my husband’s hand extra hard too. It was quite surreal seeing Edward Cullen in the flesh, golden eyes, grimaces and all.

Overall, I found the movie entertaining. If you don’t want to find out what happens in the movie, please do not read any further. I’ll be sharing many details from the film. Consider yourselves warned! Spoilers alert!

I enjoyed the movie. It wasn’t perfect, but it was okay. Top three things I enjoyed the most about it are the Cullen family, cold, damp Forks and the Edward-Bella scenes that made me want to squeal like a tween. Here are the details!

What I loved in/about the movie:
1. Casting was awesome.
Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen. Wow. Robert Pattinson is really good-looking, that has to be said. And he played that tortured soul really well. Those grimaces, the look of desire to eat/kiss/eat/kiss Bella… Pattinson WAS Edward. That penetrating stare was scary and sexy. Another thing I liked about Robert Pattinson was how he made Edward seem so ironically fragile. He was strong and fast and again, really good-looking, but also disgusted with himself. He made this vampire Edward seem vulnerably (and desirably)… human.
Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan. She’s got that simple but ethereal Bella charm. My husband thought she was sensual and hot! Another male friend thought the same thing. I also enjoyed how she brought Bella’s awkwardness to life, how she didn’t want to be seen as the new girl, the first parts of the film.
Billy Burke as Charlie Swan. This was a revelation! In the book, I saw Charlie as more of an “in the background” kinda guy. But man, Mr. Burke really brought a lot of heart in to Charlie’s character. He really showed how much love he had for Bella, but in that non-demonstrative way. Charlie was quiet, but you could feel how protective he was of his daughter. One of my favorite Charlie scenes was when Bella pretended to break up with Edward and walked out on her father. It was heartbreaking seeing Charlie try to comprehend what was happening. Again, he didn’t say much but wow, you could see in his eyes how lost and heartbroken he was. Charlie was my favorite character in this movie.
Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black. It worked for me! 15-year-old Jacob kept a low profile in this film, but the last scene he had gave a little teaser into the coming rivalry with Edward. New Moon here we come!
The humans! I loved the humans. I thought the casting was really good. Mike Newton was charming, Angela, the quiet one, was endearing, Jessica was cute, Eric was refreshing. They’re such a fun circle of friends, why go hang out with a bunch of vampires? *a picture of Edward Cullen flashes in mind* Oh, right.
The Cullen family. I could feel the kinship! Carlisle stole the show here. Peter Facinelli gave the doctor a take-charge attitude and was really fatherly.
Robert Pattinson-Kristen Stewart as Edward and Bella. They look really good together.
The Quileutes. I liked Billy Black! Sam and Embry too even if they were there for not more than ten seconds. Darn it.

2. The moments when Edward would put his arm around Bella. Oh man. Gush, gush, gush. That little gesture just made me swoon.

3. Baseball scene! Loved the action here! Those lightning strikes, jumping around, the music! Fun, fun.

4. The biology scenes. That first shot of Edward alone at the lab table was awesome. It was a beauty shot, definitely. And his hand on the nose thing that made Bella discreetly check herself? Funny! And the second biology scene when Edward introduces himself, ooooh, the tension begins! Prophase and anaphase never sounded so compelling.

5. The music. I love the soundtrack! Favorites played during the movie were the songs during the baseball scene, the “Bella Italia” scene (that’s Rob singing!) and the gazebo scene (word is Kristen Stewart suggested that song). Whenever Robert Pattinson’s songs were played during the movie, I wanted to squeal. 😛

6. The first time the Cullens walked into the cafeteria. Oh man, I was thrilled!!! Here were my favorite vampires! Rosalie and Emmett (and their white make-up), cute Alice and Jasper, and hot Edward. Loved the smile he gave when Jessica said something about him not dating anybody. Eeee! First Edward smile!

7. Forks, Washington. Oh wow, I loved how cold and damp this place is! It’s all grey and wet, you totally get why the Cullens like it there. I also enjoyed the cinematography. That aerial shot of the forest was beautiful.

8. That scene where Bella falls asleep on his chest. Damn. That look of utter devotion on Edward’s face as he gazed at his sleeping lady? Perfection. So tortured, so desiring yet in control. Robert Pattinson, you rock.

What I didn’t like in/about the movie:
1. I missed the build-up of Edward-Bella loving. First of all, I felt that the movie was choppy and rushed. Because of that, I didn’t get the crescendo of passion between the two. It was there eventually, but it was the gradual awakening of the love that made the love story so thrilling. More specifically, I felt Edward’s desire for Bella. Now Bella’s desire for Edward… more on that later.

2. Jasper’s trying-not-to-eat-Bella acting. He’s good-looking, yes. But the times when he was supposedly trying to control himself from getting too close to Bella… er… I thought he could’ve showed it much better. It was as if he always in shock, not struggling. But if shock was the intent, then he delivered.

3. The make-up threw me off at first. The vampire white make-up was a bit of an exaggeration for me at first, but I got used to it eventually.

4. The nomads weren’t menacing enough. Since Victoria, James and Laurent were the main antagonists, I was expecting them to be really vile and creepy. They’re all sexy and gorgeous, but not menacing. I didn’t feel creeped out a single bit.

5. The effects. Maybe it’ll be better in New Moon, which will probably have a bigger budget.

6. Not enough Cullens. Aside from Edward and Carlisle, I would’ve loved to see more of Emmett, Rosalie, Esme, Jasper and Alice.

I’m on the fence with…
1. Bella’s desire for Edward. The earlier parts when she was trying to get the hang of the new school and her new home, I enjoyed that. She was a little fidgety, angsty. I felt that. But as she got to know Edward, I couldn’t feel her falling in love. Intrigued about the vampire, yes, but not in love. Apart from the kissing scene (which should’ve been longer!), I didn’t get her very human desire (you know what I mean) for Edward. It’s like she was holding something back all the time. I didn’t catch any smitten, lovelorn vibe from her. I did from Edward, but not from Bella.

Maybe it was the script. Because I do like Kristen Stewart. Maybe a little more passion from Bella would’ve been good? Or was it tempered so the film can cater to a younger audience? I don’t know. I’m half and half on this one.

2. The lullaby. Oh no. Edward humming Bella to sleep? Edward on the keys and saying, “You inspired this one…” It wasn’t there! Unless you’ve read the book, you wouldn’t have known there was a lullabye moment at all. Just a gorgeously composed piano piece. I was happy with how the lullaby sounds, but sad that it wasn’t considered a key scene in the film. Oh well. You can’t have everything.

And so…
The Twilight film is special in its own way, so let’s not compare it with the book. And does this make me excited about New Moon? Yes! Go Team Jacob! Will I watch the movie again? I sure will.

This quote from the movie “10 Things I Hate About You” best captures how I feel about the film:
Chastity: “I know you can be overwhelmed, and you can be underwhelmed, but can you ever just be whelmed?”
Bianca: “I think you can in Europe. “

And I think you can in Twilight. I’m not ecstatic about the film, but I’m not disappointed either. I enjoyed it. I was… whelmed. :)

*****

Now don’t go throwing tomatoes at me! These are my opinions. What did you think of the film? Feel free to share! I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I can’t believe how giggly and teenagey I am over this whole film.

I ACTUALLY LOVE THIS MOVIE and only like the book. It’s all because of Kristene Stewart’s Bella. She made me not hate Bella.

She actually convinced me of her desire for him. That scene with her mom on the phone, with her saying she loves Forks now. “Is it about a boy?” her mom asks, and her expression of “oh yea totally about a boy”. And her aggression in the kissing scene???? OH MY GOD!

I watched this with my bros and cousin and we all agreed the sexual tension and most important, the chemistry between them were white hot (even with Edward’s subzero temp)!

I agree wholeheartedly about the excitement of seeing him put his arm around Bella the first time.

And totally loved Alice and Dr. Cullen. My fave vamp relatives; they’re casting was perfect.

I’ve seen it twice already. I am so sick of myself because I am constantly thinking about little moments from the movie.

My favorite line: “I don’t have the strength to stay away from you anymore”. My heart melted in a pile of mush inside my thoracic cage! (anatomy class talking). [insert girly squeal here]

I haven’t seen the movie yet, but just an observation… I’ve read some reviews and it’s funny how people who did not read the books though the lines were too mushy but the book fans thought they were not mushy enough! 😀

    Haha you can’t satisfy everyone!

I don’t know.. i was a bit disappointed. NOT BECAUSE I READ THE BOOK. No, I didn’t compare it, in fact I can’t even remember details of the book anymore.

I didn’t feel much chemistry between them. In fairness, i’d disagree with Toni and agree with tinHekmi on Bella’s acting. I thought she was great. PAttinson seemed awkward to me — i seem to be the first to say that :p

sweet “kilig” moment on the arms around Bella WAS CUTE! :p Soundtrack — obviously awesome, I believe Meyer mentioned what she listened to when writing the books and they were great so no surprise about the movie’s soundtrack.

The Cullens – YES PERFECT CASTING. I Was apprehensive when I was seeing trailers and interviews.. but they came to be perfect. Dr. Carlisle was perfect.

Jacob.. i look forward to the real acting on the next book.

Forks, kinda how i imagined it..

Effects.. eerrr.. not so good. a bit rough. :p

the story/movie itself — didn’t have an impact really. I didn’t feel what was really between bella and edward until the kiss (which was whoa! hahaha)

ok… i’m sorta blogging here already. lemme do that on my blog :p

Let us know where to read it! :)

I’ve been waiting for this post forever!

Toni, I am WHELMED, too. You covered most of the bases when it comes to how I feel about the movie.

My biggest PLUS: Casting was PERFECT. Rob Pattinson IS Edward. Kristen IS Bella.

My biggest MINUS: The cheese. There was sometimes too much of it, even for me, who’s a TOTAL sap.

I’m excited for the sequel, now that the movie’s earned enough!

The movie totally made me want to read the books again (for the 5th time)!

P.S. I’m going to see it again, on one quiet evening, with a fellow Twi-hard. I’ve read on the forums that who you watch it with/the audience in the theater makes a difference in how you enjoy the movie. I was in the theater with some on-the-fence friends and a bunch of tweens who giggled and laughed and made snide remarks at the most inappropriate places. I want to go back and soak it all in like a true fan. :)

    Nice review Toni!

I can feel na you wanted people to realize that the book can stand on its own without a movie to benefit from. and the movie naman can stand on its own, without it being based on a book.

But in reality, they are related. So yes, whelmed is the best feeling. Saying “Maganda siya”…is an understatement.

Thanks Junnie! :) Yes, they can stand on their own even if they’re related!

I loved Charlie, Edward was beautiful, Esme was very endearing, though I would have wanted more Cullens, the humans were fun, etc. etc….But the scene I loved the most was when they both arrived in school and Edward (in shades > swoon, swoon, swoon) said, “I’m breaking all the rules now…” and he had his arm around bella……….gaaaaaaaadddd!!! Tama ka. Whelmed is the right word for how I feel bwt the film, too. Hehehe. :)

I can’t wait to write my own blog about TWILIGHT. The schedule doesn’t allow me.
But anyway, we have the same sentiments towards the film Ms.Toni.

    I was not overwhelmed.

    I was not underwhelmed.

    I was whelmed!

And I love the baseball scene! The time when Alice felt that the nomads
were arriving, I felt the rush. Even my partner felt it.

Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen was perfect.
Kristen as Bella made it above perfection – if their is such.

Now that 13th month pay will be given, I think I can
have copy of the book – not just relying on an internet-downloaded eBook.

The movie was as crappy as the book. Overall, other than the obvious eye candy, make-up was a mess. I can’t imagine why the other students couldn’t tell that the characters were actually dead in the first place, rather than vampires! I’m sure if their makeup didn’t give them away, their hairdoes would have!

Acting was bad, Robert Pattison can’t really act can he, other than look pretty? Bella was absolutely whiney and needy. I don’t understand why she needed to depict gals the way they really are in real life, I mean, we see that everyday, we don’t need a movie to remind us! I was hoping for her character to be strengthen in the movie as compared to the book. I think Alice’s character was the strongest in the movie, with her vampire “dad” being the next in line, the rest were just there to fill in the space.

Only recommended for teens to swoon over, adults can forego this completely!

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Just watched it earlier! It was okay. I found the sparkling scene funny Though. That was NOT how I imagined it. =))

Oh, but Carlisle rocked. And Emmett! They should have shown more Emmett! I love the vampires, they were perfect for their roles. The cooking scene was awesome.

And yes, I agree with the humans too. The guy who played Mike Newton was great — he’s so different from his geeky self in Joan of Arcadia.

The long hair on Taylor Lautner kind of felt off, but he pulled a cute Jacob. I’m not complaining!

And in a way, I got to like Bella here, since I really did not like her in the book. So it was a pretty good movie. They better show New Moon so there’d be more of Jacob. <3

Oh gosh, I found the sparkling scene funny too. I went “Ohhhhhkay.” He looked kinda sweaty. Hahaha! Oh well.

Alex, I have to disagree with your assessment of Bella not being strengthened in the film.

Did you compare the two? Bella actually tells jokes in this film.

She is at times the aggressor between the two, i.e. scene in the meadow when she keeps wanting to come close to him, and in the bedroom kissing scene.

I didn’t hear her whine at once in the film. Can you cite an example of when she actually whined?

As far as the needy thing, she and Edward being inseparable and interdependent is kinda the whole point, but I thought at least this time she did show a core strength that I find lacking in the book.

Overall, a much improved Bella. I personally detest Bella in the book and I love Kristen Stewart’s Bella precisely because of these improvements.

I agree with you on a lot of things. The movie wasn’t what I expected, but I loved it nevertheless. I’ve already watched it twice! LOL.

My favorite scenes are the baseball scene, the part where the Cullens and Hales enter the cafeteria and the part where Edward, wearing shades, and Bella arrived in school together and he put his arm around her. ♥ I loved all the scenes with the Cullens/Hales in it!

I also thought that Bella being madly in love with Edward was missing. It didn’t seem like she was super in love with him. Oh well. I hope it gets better in the next movie.

I also didn’t like how the film was directed and edited. I hope they do something about that in New Moon.

Hi. I am a tween girl who is on the fourth book, and is a HUGE twilight fan. I agree with everything exept “Edwards” beauty. I do not see Rob hot AT ALL! I think his hair is weird, and in only certain pictures or scenes is he hot. I just didn’t buy it. I wanted to add something to the “Jasper trying to stay away Bella” thing. Did he not look like Edward Scissorhands in the movie? The white mackup, stiff back, and fear in eyes… TOTAL EDWARD SCISSORHANDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love Edward Cullen. You make the movie so appealing!I was so frustrated how the murdered the scenes I loved most: the meadow scene, the car scene (where Edward drove Bella home from Port Angeles) and the scene where Edward sucked James’ venom 😀

    (a) I loved the casting, the characters in the movie did actually match the way I had imagined them.
    (b) Edward’s utter love for Bella was completely believable, he yearned for her and loved her deeply but was tortured by this, which I thank Robert Pattinson for portaying so well.

However I thought that for the most part, Edward was much too serious, I wanted to see him be somewhat more cheeky and playful at times, but instead he was so serious that it was actually comical at times, at least for me, as I imagined him to be playful on the surface with a serious tone to some of the more important things he was telling Bella. A little light and shade to make the serious points more serious and the witty parts more humorous, making Edward that much more endearing. However this is just my opinion.

I also agree with the articles remark that the movie was far too rushed and choppy. The movie easily could have gone for 45mins maybe an hour longer than it did, which would have improved the plot and made it easier for the screenwriters actually stick with the books original story (however I did actually enjoy the small changes they made to the story, it was only the lack of important scenes I did not like).

Additionally, many of the best lines, in my opinion, were dropped! Of course Edward’s heart wrenching one liners were shoved in everywhere possible, but Bella’s key lines were, more often than not, missing, which left much to be desired from Bella’s overall character. What could be percieved as perhaps Bella’s most crucial line in the novel was cut from the movie – her response to Edward at the caffateria table when she explains how completely normal she is – “I’m absolutely ordinary, except for all the bad stuff, like near-death experiences and being so clumsy that I’m almost disabled”. In my opinion, this line from Bella perfectly captures Bella’s perception of herself and how that contradicts Edward’s perception of her.

It wasn’t only the best lines, but some of the key scenes were cut also, such as the chapter in the book where Bella faints in biology when the students are testing their blood types. Although it does not essentially contribute to the plotline, it does contribute to character development and to the development of character relationships, plus, it was just downright funny and ironic – some clever writing from Stephenie Meyer with not so clever directing from Catherine Hardwicke.

Again, as mentioned in the article, the development of the complicated relationship between Edward and Bella and their love for each other was completely missed in the movie. Their relationship, in the novel, was not a quick and fleeting romance, Stephenie Meyer cleverly made it clear that this was not some cheesy love at first sight bit, yet still managed to communicate that they were soul mates from the beginning. Yet this was lacking in the movie. They’re relationship could easily have been construed as some fleeting, typical, summer, teen romance. However the point was made clear in the novel that this was NOT the case.

I also agree with the author of the above article that the soundtrack and the baseball scene were both incredible. The music continuously matched the atmosphere of the scenes and the baseball scene brought the much needed playful tone which certainly had me sitting on the edge of my seat with excitement while singing along with Paramore.

Overall, however, the movie – for me – was a disappointment as it missed the mark in so many ways. It has SO much potential, which made it that much more of a let down. I didn’t hate the movie, I couldn’t hate it when I loved the novel, from which it came, so much. I wish the directors and screenwriters had of spent more time on the movie so that it had of lived of to its potential and lived up to the standards that the novel had set.

This is just my opinion on the movie so please don’t hate me for it, it’s just my thoughts on what went wrong with the movie. I don’t expect anyone to agree with my thoughts on the film, in fact I would like to hear from anyone who has a reasonable response to challenge anything I have said. I am very open to the ideas and thoughts of others that may prove some of my own ideas to be ill thought =]

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! I enjoyed reading them. :)

Hi Toni, great rev- absolutely spot on. I totally agree with you- Charlie is my favorite character too in the film especially when he pulled the curtain to shut out Tyler while in the hospital emergency department- so funny. I keep on re-reading the books and watched both films a hundred times. It is so great to put a face on each character in the book- casting is just so perfect and not to mention the awesome soundtrack- I don’t care about the time I have to drive to work while listening to the twilight music!!!! Everytime I read eclipse and breaking dawn-the books are brought alive in my head by the actors and actresses portraying the various characters in the film. My favorite lines are first is when Bella said “what a stupid lamb” in response to Edward saying “and so the lion fell in love with the lamb” this is just so cute and funny. And secondly is when Edward said “you just don’t know how long I have waited for you”- eeeeeeeeee it is just so insanely exhilarating!!!!

I’ve also read the draft of “midnight sun” which is telling the story from Edwards’ perspective- it is fabulous!!!! I hope Stephanie will find her inspiration again and be able to finish the book for it is really a shame if she won’t- it is just so good. I wish this could be made into a movie but I know it might not be possible as most of the scenes might just be a repeat from the “Twilight”. Anyway, more power to all twilighters.

Happy to meet a fellow Twihard! 😀
