Dirty deliciousness! Not very long ago, my friends (Bok, Pie and Diane) and I hung out at U.P. and well, pigged out a little bit. While we walked around the campus, we stopped every now and then to eat a couple of sticks of isaw, gizzard, barbecue and fish balls. Yum. Our last stop was dessert and what better choice could we make than dirty ice cream!
Manong had three flavors that day: chocolate, avocado and cheese. One cone costs P10 (about US$0.20?). If you opt for the fancier cone though (I think it was a waffle cone), it can cost you P20. What I love about dirty ice cream is that it’s not very creamy, but it has a smooth milky consistency. It’s not very rich but still flavorful.
Dirty ice cream is homemade ice cream sold from pushcarts on the streets. Maybe that’s where it got its name. There was talk when I was a kid that it’s dirty because the vendor’s sweat drops into ice cream buckets when he bends over to fill your cone. Yuckkk. Truth is, the ones I’ve encountered are quite sanitary. I haven’t gone home with a bum stomach because of dirty ice cream.
There are other ice cream men who go around neighborhoods with their carts. You know, the ones of the more prominent brands with their jingle playing while the ice cream men peddle towards your place. Then there are elegant restaurants which serve equally elegant ice cream (Have you tasted truffle ice cream? It’s heavenly.) But dirty ice cream has a charm of its own. The nostalgia, the cheap thrill, the quaintness, its distinct homemade taste — all these go into a cone of dirty ice cream. And if you slide some dirty ice cream scoops between two slices of monay bread? Oh so dirty but so delicious, delicious, delicious.

August 22, 2006 at 12:21 am (18 years ago)I love ice cream, especially ice cream in other parts of the world! It’s a good treat and makes us feel special! Though I would have trouble eating ice cream with someone else’s sweat – scary!
