Kamote (sweet potato) is a staple at my grandparents’ home. My grandmother has kamote with all her meals. It would usually be boiled kamote, which she would mash down with her fork. She considers it a healthier substitute for rice, so she would eat viands with the kamote mash.

While that’s delicious, I prefer my kamote fried! Fried kamote chips and wedges — yum! They’re easy to prepare, a joy to snack on AND a healthier alternative to junkfood chips.

Kamote Chips

Quick and easy recipe: Slice kamote into chips or wedges. Slide the pieces into hot oil, and fry till the edges are brown. Scoop them out with a slotted spoon, drain on paper towels, and ta-da! You’ve got a fantastic snack — tasty and healthy.

Merienda

And here’s where the health part cancels out a bit. 😛 I like my kamote with a little butter. I dot a fried kamote chip with butter, let it melt and pop it in my mouth. BLISS!

This snack takes me back to merienda time in my grandparents’ home. My grandmother would prepare this for her grandkids, and we’d all snack on them heartily. She could have her kamote mash, but we’d savor these kamote chips and wedges more!

    I haven’t had a camote snack in months but I usually take mine “fritter” (like thin fries) style. I like ’em crunchy and loaded with caramelized sugar, with additional suger sprinkles pa! A sweet tooth, much? Hehehe!

    Mmmm kamote! I think I last ate kamote a few weeks before I gave birth :)

    I love kamote-cue with lots and lots of hardened caramelized sugar! But if I’m feeling healthy, I would boil kamote, mash it, and stir in a bit of evaporated milk and sugar. mmm!

    Had camote fries from one of the restos here. Pero miss ko na ang street camote q sa Pinas. =)

    i made kamoteng maruya a couple of months ago, and i loved it. i’m thinking of making another batch this month. i also love fried kamote dipped in sugar.

    oh we love kamote as a family, pero mom rarely buys them :p we have them as chips or boiled then we spread butter :) yumm!!!

    but its true ha, eating kamote makes you fart more than you usually do :p

    hey toni! i have my sweet kamote the same way as you–with butter. but i also add a small (small daw) sprinkling of sugar 😉

    Oh yum, I never knew it was also called kamote. We just call it sweet potato or even yams here. I love to put some into pumpkin soup for a real sweet boost. 😉

    uhmm… yummy. i last ate kamote a month ago. dala pa ng aking mother-in-law galing probinsya. i just like it boiled and with butter too while it is still hot.

    hubby just had kamote earlier. mashed kamote with condensed milk. agawan sila ng sis-in-law ko. didn’t try it. i don’t eat kamote kasi.

    I had the classic kamoteq from the kanto. 😛 How the brown sugar coats each slice perfectly is amazing. Sometimes we’ll have fried kamote chips like you prepared. Yummy. I haven’t tried smothering them with butter, I might have to after this post. :)

    Oh yum. Butter brings out the creaminess of the kamote. Try it try it!

    My mom also likes to cook kamote for merienda. But instead of butter, we drizzle it with sugar. My MIL on the other hand likes it the way you do. With butter.

    i just had kamote bits for lunch. It was a garnish on the side dish that i had which was Lumpiang Hubad. Yum yum…

    …but the best way i like my kamote is when it’s boiled – with a touch of butter and muscovado sugar sprinkled over it. yum yum…(again!)

    I never really liked camote. In my mind it’s a fake potato, trying hard by being sweet ;p But now that I have Raine, I’m actually thinking of cooking a batch of camote fries, just so she has something healthy to snack on. So hard to feed a finicky toddler!

    I also like it as guinataan (w/ saba, bilo-bilo, sago and langka) 😉

    i really love camote!!!!!!!last kaming kumain kanina-7-11-09……me and my sislings likes yung pinapakuluan and pag luto na,gagawin naming mashed and lalagyan ng margarine and sugar……love it!!!!!!!!!!:-D
