How’d you guys like the recent episode of Top Chef Las Vegas? Here are my random thoughts as I watched the show. Would love to hear yours!

  • Woohoo! Final episode. Top 3 are Kevin, Michael and Bryan. No Quickfires anymore!
  • The Challenge: Mystery Box dish (use ingredients from the mystery box to create a dish), Chef’s Choice dish, dessert. A must.
  • Okay! Surprise Sous Chef time! Yey, it’s Ashley!! One of my faves! Please please please let someone draw her. And yep, Kevin draws Preeti and Ash, Michael draws Jessie and Eli, Bryan draws Jen and Ashley.
  • Kevin doesn’t look too happy about getting Preeti, huh? His prep time is dedicated to being in the dumps about how slow Preeti’s working.
  • Okay curveball time: Who’s knocking on the door? It’s the chefs’ moms! Aww. Sweet. The brothers’ Mom is so cute, buttoning up her kids’ jackets.
  • Another curveball: Add another course dedicated to Mom and inspired by a childhood dish.
  • Bryan looks the most organized of the three.
  • Kevin’s putting bacon in his dessert. Uh-oh. Bacon in dessert is kinda polarizing, isn’t it?
  • Michael’s dishes look the most creative.
  • Okay judging time. Leave it to editing to leave the viewer really on the edge of his seat huh? Good things about this chef, bad things as well. You can’t really tell who’s the winner yet.
  • The lady judge in pink says Michael’s mushroom puree that he molded into a mushroom is a “gimmick.” “It’s a gimmick. And we  don’t need gimmicks, not at this level.” Ow!
  • Dessert time: I want to try Michael’s dessert. Butternut squash ice cream, cake, etc… Sounds POW!
  • Okay, Judges Table: Bryan’s dishes are restrained, Toby says, but Bryan says he wouldn’t call it a fault. The venison was his most successful dish of the night.  Kevin’s Chicken Skin childhood dish was his most successful dish of the night. Michael’s most successful dish was the Mystery Box dish. And Bryan nails dessert, but Michael could’ve won the dessert round if his caked was cooked properly. So at this point it’s Kevin – 1, Bryan – 2 and Michael – 1. But a close match.
  • KEVIN, YOU ARE NOT TOP CHEF. We didn’t have a happy, jolly Kevin this episode. I think his disappointment with his first sous chef pulled him down the rest of the challenge. Oh well. There goes my bet.
  • IT’S THE BROTHERS NOW. Oh wow. I’m thinking Bryan’s winning.
  • MICHAEL, YOU ARE TOP CHEF. I honestly didn’t see that coming. But he so deserves it! He’s the most edgy, creative and adventurous of the three, and he consistently made this known through the food he cooked.

BEST SEASON EVER. Michael Voltaggio will totally trump the winners of the past seasons.

I can’t wait for the next season of Top Chef!

The dish I would love to have tasted:

Kevin’s Southern Fried Chicken Skin with Squash Casserole and Tomato

Big fan of Top Chef…..from the judging table it did seem that the tasters favor Brian by the way they critique his food. However, I expected that one of the brothers is going to win anyway from the get go so no curve balls thrown here IMHO.

Let me also say tis my first season to watch this show and I love it.

It’s the best season so far, Photo Cache! Other good seasons were Season 1 and 4. :) And maybe 3.

So so late comment but I so agree. Best. Season. Evar. The season’s cheftestants seem more organized and ready to face the challenges. A lot of them delivered well, and it’s telling when someone’s eliminated because the food didn’t taste as good as the others instead of because something was majorly wrong with the dish.

That said though, I was rooting for Bryan. I see why Michael won, yes, he’s the maverick of the bunch, but I can’t help it. I like Bryan. I thought it was his win too—if you judge just by the evening, it seems like his night, but I guess they took in the rest of the season’s performance too, and while Bryan was pretty solid, Michael took lots of risks which rewarded him well. Looking forward to the next seasons—I hope they scout contestants as good as they did for Vegas. There’s a lot of James Beard nominees here, yes?
