This has been quite a restful week for a lot of us here in the Philippines. There was no work on Oct. 29 for the Sangguniang Kabataan elections, Oct. 30 was a regular working day, Oct. 31 was just half a working day (where I worked anyway), Nov. 1 was All Saints’ Day (no work) and Nov. 2 is All Souls’ Day (no work!). I’ve been catching up on a LOT of sleep.
A LOT of sleep.
Anyway before I go back to playing The Sims 2, here are some highlights of my vacation so far!
Every year, a remote Alaskan town is covered in darkness for 30 days. It is within these 30 days of night that the story takes place. Vampires emerge and take advantage of the dark, killing off the townsfolk one by one. A sheriff and his estranged wife take the lead in saving the survivors and themselves.
I liked it! I detest horror flicks but thanks again to the Twilight series, my fear of vampires has slightly decreased. H read the graphic novel of 30 Days before watching the film and he couldn’t help but compare. As with majority of books-turned-to-film, the book was better. I’ll read the graphic novel later and see which one I like better. But go watch this film anyway! It’s just the right kind of gory, has those scenes that make the audience wince and scream (and then laugh together), and the storytelling is fascinating.
Horrorphile writes a good review of the film.
Balls of Fury
A ping-pong phenomenon has-been, Randy Daytona, is asked to perform in a secret mission. To successfully get into the “world” of Feng, one of the FBI’s most wanted guys, Randy has to perfect his ping-pong skills under the guidance of a blind coach and his beautiful niece.
It was so funny! Dan Folger (who plays Randy) was really funny. Lots of wacky one-liners and slapstick humor. Perfect for those who love light comedies. And of course, Christopher Walken (Feng) was fantastic. Feng’s character was quite complicated and Christopher Walken was the perfect guy for the role! I just have one wish: I wish there was more of Terry Crew! (Terry Crew’s the guy who plays Latrelle in White Chicks. 😉 )
Good Luck Chuck
Charlie Logan is cursed: sleep with him once, and the next guy you’ll meet will be your true love. This sex-with-no-strings-attached arrangement works for Charlie at first, but once he meets the girl of his dreams, he knows he has to break the curse.
It was okay. Dan Folger was here too and was also funny. The movie was predictable, nevertheless I enjoyed it. It was light, cute and was a good way to kill time.
The story is narrated by Death — a soul collector. It is he who tells the story of a girl named Liesel Meminger, one who has eluded him several times and one who is the book thief.
I am currently reading this book and it is fantastic. The imagery is beautifully rich and deep. Perhaps I’ll write about it in detail when I’m done. For now, I am trying not to read too much of it in one sitting so I can relish each chapter. The book is nestled softly by my bedside begging to be read, and I’ll do just that shortly before bedtime. Go get a copy of this book now!
Wicked
This is the story of the Wicked Witch of the West. Her name is Elphaba and boy is she misunderstood! In the book we learn to understand the reasons behind her quiet demeanor (and it’s not just because she’s green), how she built a friendship with Galinda (who later becomes the Good Witch of the North), and how she eventually became wicked.
I’m having trouble finishing this book. Gah. But I WILL FINISH THIS. It’s a lovely book, don’t get me wrong. I just need to be in a particular mood to read it.

November 2, 2007 at 11:51 pm (16 years ago)You did a lot during your holidays. I think if I’d have a list – it will be (1) sleep, (2) sleep, and (3) sleep. I’ve been busy due to our annual fall board meeting and been sleeping in hotels. I miss my own bed right now. I’m going home tonight though. I think I’ll crash right after I’ll get off the train.

November 8, 2007 at 7:56 am (16 years ago)i had trouble finishing maguire’s confessions of an ugly stepsister, too. i think i was too jaded by my child-mind’s version of cinderella so i was fighting the “distorted” images he was drawing up in the book, hehe. anyway, i’ve been wanting to watch Wicked (the stage production) for the longest time, but have not had the chance. *sigh*
i’ll keep an eye out for the book thief next time i’m at the bookstore. thanks toni!
