Weekend Soiree #2: A game of comment interaction

by

words

The rules are easy. I will ask a question. The first person who comments will answer my question, and will leave a question for the next person to answer. This next person will answer that question, and leave a question for the next next person to answer. I am sure you get it! ;)To make things more fun, the questions have to reflect the chosen theme. For example, if the theme is “Popcorn,” all questions should be relate to popcorn. What is your favorite popcorn flavor? How do you pop your popcorn? As much as possible, let’s not repeat the questions for added fun! You are also welcome to play more than once!

Since the first round was successful, we’ll play this game every weekend! Let’s begin with the second weekend soiree.

The theme: BOOKS

My question for Person #1: What book got you hooked on reading?

If I remember correctly, Archie comics started it all, then SVT followed through. And the rest, as they say, is history. :)

Unfortunately, yes. Sometimes artsy covers get my attention, other times, colorful covers get picked up. But either way, I still read the back and if I’m not completely sold, I go home and read reviews off the book on Amazon.

Question: Did you give a book to anyone this Christmas? What was it?

(Sidenote: Toni, what a coincidence! I thought of this question before commenting and then, I saw the keycode was “cullen.” I gave my sister her own copy of Twilight and New Moon as she has the 3rd book na and she’s just so in love with Edward! I think I’m gonna fall for him too since my sister and I have the same taste in fictional male characters. I have yet to read them though. Oh, and thanks to your review, I wouldn’t have considered reading it. It was my sister going gaga over the books that gave me the final push.)

Yes, I did. I gave a small book called “Undercover Golf” to a mentor who has everything. It’s about practicing your swings while in the car, grocery, gym, etc. I bought it at Borders in Berjaya Times Square, KL. I hope he gives up the medical journals for the meantime and read the book I gave him. I’m sure he will, it’s golf that relaxes him – Wednesdays and Sundays are his golf days.

Books and movies are two things I love but sometimes the movie does not capture the magic of the book. So, I prefer to watch the movie before reading the book. That way, I don’t know what will happen next. When I do read the book after, my imagination can still soar. The Harry Potter books, for instance, although well made, lack the many magical moments in the books.

Do you buy a book on the basis of the review, the title, the quality of the cover design or only after you’ve peeked and read the first chapter?

none of the above. i buy a book based on the author and cover (yes, i do have a tendency to judge a book by it’s cover).

No I don’t. I like to extend my reading habit every night. Well I usually fall asleep reading so I never finish a book in one sitting or lying as the case may be.

Coming up with my top 10 books is tough but here’s 10 authors that, with the help of local libraries and thrift stores I’ve managed to read MOST if not ALL of their books— Stephen King, Danielle Steele, John Jakes, James Clavell, James Michener, Johanna LIndsey, Mary Balogh, Stephen Cannell, MIchael Palmer and MAry Higgins Clarke— all great storytellers. Some Top Books: Shogun (James Clavell), Thorn Birds (Colleen McCullogh) and if you like romance, my all-time favorites, Man of My Dreams (Johanna Lindsey) and Simply Love (Mary Balogh).

I read 1 to 2 books a week (if time permits). I also love reading the dedication and acknowledgments of the authors.

Yes. There is, and it is my mom. My mother loved collecting books since she was in high school and all her books since then are still on our bookshelves. She told us her reason for collecting all of those are for her future offsprings. Usually every month or every two weeks if she’s not busy, she stops by at a book sale just to by us books. One summer day while she was cleaning our bookshelves, she noticed the pages of her books being torn out by termites. Then she became mad and punished us by not giving us our weekly baon if we didn’t read at least an article. But what came next is that I learned to love books so much that I would flee from doing household chores just for the sake of reading… which also made my mother mad. Hehehe.

Love Story by Erich Segal. I read it when I was about 11. Picked up a copy at home, didn’t think it would make me cry but it did.

I never finished The Purpose Driven Life. I found it boring. What about you?

It’s not just one book, but a couple of series. I recommend any one of these series:

    1. The Belgariad and then The Malloreon (The Malloreon branches off The Belgariad)
    2. The Elenium and then The Tamuli (same thing as #1, The Tamuli branches off The Elenium)

These are all by David and Leigh Eddings. I love them. :)

Hah! I’ll be revealing my age with this one (ok lang 😀 ) An $85 4-inch thick copy of the complete works of Shakespeare — I *had* to buy it for the Shakespeare class I was taking, which I ended up hating (apparently here in the US almost everyone has had extensive Shakespeare experience in high school, so most class days I felt so lost — I’ve since learned to appreciate Shakespeare better). And back then (’88) there was no bookfinder or any of the price comparison sites, so I didn’t know how to look for it used and cheaper. :(

I really should use bookmarks! When I was younger I got in the habit of folding the pages. Now that really bugs me. After I stopped that I just tried to remember the page number. But I plan to make a few bookmarks in the coming week.

What book has changed your life?
