There’s a bakeshop called Tulips near my grandparents’ place. When we were kids, my sisters and I loved their Egg Pie, Pineapple Pie, hot Pan de Sal and Kababayan. We also indulged in Pan de Coco and that bread in the picture with the red filling (is it really called Pan de Regla?).
Upon waking up from our afternoon naps, Maymee (our grandma) would make us cups of hot cocoa. The dining table would be filled with the different merienda fare from Tulips. I loved grabbing a piece of Pan de Sal and dunking it (or as we call it “dudok”) in our chocolate drink. Yum.
Whenever the aroma of freshly baked bread fills my senses, I’m transported back to this part of my childhood. Isn’t it wonderful how our sense of smell acts as a time machine? All it takes is a trip past a bakery and I’m six years old again.

November 21, 2005 at 10:51 am (18 years ago)pan de regla, he he he. funny name.
I’m a bread person. Anything basta bread, I’ll eat it. This one from Fortune bakeshop I really love, yung ensaymadang round. I think tag 40 pesos plus cya. Ung maraming cheese sa ibabaw. sarap 😀

November 21, 2005 at 11:40 am (18 years ago)uhmmm, pan de regla? what a unique name…kakatuwa talaga tayong mga pinoy, galing nating magbigay ng names. tones, do you have any idea how much is a pan de sal nowadays? when i was a kid, mama would send me to a panaderya to buy two pesos worth of pandesal, they’re as big as my fist and cost 10 cents each..ngayon kaya?

November 21, 2005 at 12:59 pm (18 years ago)we used to frequent a bakery called tulips in project 6. although i have already forgotten the names of the bread and pastries there, i still remember the smell and taste of their goodies. it was so yummy and delicious.

November 21, 2005 at 1:35 pm (18 years ago)jeanny: Hindi naman ensaymada yun? O baka cheese roll ang tawag. Whatever it is, sounds yummy!
misis14: Tulips in Project 6 is EXACTLY the shop I was referring to!
anna: May P1 pan de sal pero sobrang liit na nito! Wala na yatang bababa sa piso eh.

November 22, 2005 at 1:19 pm (18 years ago)you know the cakes usually sold in such bakeries? yung parang heavy-handed sa butter yung buttercream icing?
my officemate said they’d usually buy such a cake… and since nobody really wants all that icing, they’d scrape it off and chill it..
then they’d use it as spread later for pandesal… its like a sweetened margarine thing that they love daw at home

cathy: It’s a Pinoy bread that’s shaped like a cupcake and tastes a little bit sweet… di ko ma-describe! Pero lahat yata ng bakery may kababayan so better try it nalang 😀 I’m at a loss for words describing it!
