On Writing

by

Fan Fic
I wrote my first fan fiction piece last night. I had fun!!! It was inspired by Meyer’s Twilight series. See it here if you’re a fan of hers: After the Eclipse. Methinks I will write some more.

Writing Prompts
This is one of the blogs I enjoy writing in the most (http://www.storyfever.com). I get to play with aaaaaaaanything and just put them up. It doesn’t really have a theme so it’s my therapy blog. I hardly touch my poetry blog now because of that, but that’s okay.

Pursue Your Passion
More and more, I am beginning to realize that I have to take bigger steps towards writing. Seriously. Okay here’s the deal. I’ve been in advertising for almost ten years now, and it’s been a swell ride. I love the creative playground that it is. But there’s this other passion of mine I feel I can still explode. Does anyone know of good writing workshops? Oh man that Barbara Gonzalez workshop from 2 years ago was REALLY fun. If she had another class I’d totally go for it. I’d also like to take basic writing classes. For example, I don’t know when to use whomever and whoever (reminds me of an episode of The Office…). But I guess that’s something textbooks can help me with.

Reaching Out
I gave a little talk at my high school last Wednesday. It was so much fun! I want to do it again. Haha! I talked to the Poetry Club and taught them some creative writing techniques – stuff I’ve picked up from my writing class, my own experiences and from work. The students were brilliant poets. With a bit more encouragement, I am 100% certain they will find their voices. Or if they have found their voices, they will find the courage to shout out more.

Dream Dream Dream
Real life beckons. Ah. Bills to pay and all that jazz. I’ll take baby steps towards that writing goal. I promise that to myself. Let’s mold reality to make way for that dream.

    toni,

why don’t we organize a creative writing class?

    mukhang maraming interesado dito,
what with blogging and personal publishing
being the dominant force it is now,
and moreso in the foreseeable future “,

I agree! That’s a great idea, spanx. Do you know of any writers or maybe some who know of writers who can help us? Or any writing classes we can attend? That’d be great. Spread the word!

unlike in the states, the philippines (i think) does not have schools with adult education classes offering non-certification courses such as painting, or bonsai-making, or creative writing. there are workshops sponsored by ateneo, or ust, or up, or siliman, but they are so competitive that it seems only established writers make the grade – which thus defeats the purpose of workshopping.

actually i’m amazed at your own story prompt initiative. that, in a way, is a workshop. and if you want to pursue a real writing goal, why don’t you put up your own live workshop? you can call in friends who share the same love for writing. you bring in original works – essay, short story, or poem – and you start critiquing each others’ works. workshops such as this establish the art. and as it goes, true ease in writing comes from art, not chance.

    keep on writing. stay lovely.

Mr. C, thank you so much for the encouragement! You are so right, the creative writing courses I know of are quite intimidating. That’s why I really enjoyed Tweetums’ workshop. I’m thinking of joining her advanced class. Hopefully she still is holding one. I don’t know if I can critique others’ works! Perhaps when I am more confident with my writing skills and when I have apt ability to do so. 😉

Doris Lessing never finished high school and I doubt she ever attended any creative writing classes. There probably was none during her time (she’s still alive as I’m writing this) or town , which is Zimbabwe. She dropped out of school and ran away from home when she was 13 and did odd jobs to survive.

On Oct, 10, 2007, she won the Noble Prize for literature.

By no means this is intended to discourage anyone from attending a workshop when it is available. Just another point of view.

Thanks for this, bh. It’s very encouraging. :)

I love it when people pursue their passion. I myself am a late-bloomer when it comes to fulfilling my personal interests and I’ve just recently gotten back to writing as my job has me focusing on business skills, PR and sales figures most of the time.
Although I’ve susceesfully ignored it the past several years, there’s nothing like being able to scratch that writing itch whenever it comes. Right now I’m stroking it with a vigor and it’s very satisfying personally at least, and, even if I never get to finish the novel I’ve always dreamed of writing given all the responsibilities I now have with my family and work, I will continue learning and practicing. Just a little every day or whenever time permits and through blogging. Who knows?
What’s important is to keep the dream alive long enough until it bumps into reality.

You understand! :) Let’s support each other in pursuit of our dreams, shall we? Thank you for sharing those beautiful thoughts.

Please tell us more about what you experienced in your writing class with Ms. Twee. I’m interested also to enroll soon, but i would appreciate if you can share some of your experiences. I also need to have a basic course in english writing. i am not that grammatically correct that’s why i’m kinda hesitant to join her class. i might feel intimidated.

Hi Grace. Our writing workshop was called “The Joy of Writing.” Ms. Gonzalez taught us techniques on how we could find our “voice.” For example, I somewhat already knew my voice was best heard in poetry. Through her teachings and lessons, I was able to discover methods and styles to help hone that voice. Basic knowledge in English will help, but your classmates and Ms. Twee will also help you along the way. The group I was in was very encouraging. The group was also very intimate (not more than ten to a class), so it is easier and more comfortable to share work. I’ll email you in more detail in a bit. :)

You’re on a roll, go go go Tones! :)

I’ve been putting off taking classes for my personal satisfaction but I finally enrolled in Italian class and I’m planning on taking a creative writing class in January to learn technical tips (especially with poetry) as well. Like you said, baby steps. I don’t want to romanticize what could probably be just a fleeting interest, but I can’t quite quell the gnawing feeling that perhaps, this is something I really enjoy doing, you know.

An Italian class? How lovely!!! I’m so happy for you! And yes, baby steps. I too don’t want to lose romance with this passion of mine by hurrying it up. We’ll let it unfold slowly. :)
