Vegetables. Some of us have a love affair with them, others have a love-hate (or hate-hate) relationship with them. One sure thing we all have in common is: We were all made to eat vegetables. We all started out with mashed peas and squash, were scared out of our wits with the bitterness of the wrinkly ampalaya (bitter gourd), and wondered how many more vegetables we should eat. The Bahay Kubo song had the answers, of course!
We all have a vegetable story to tell and a vegetable dish recipe to share. That is why I am very eager to be hosting and inviting you to join Lasang Pinoy 18: Oh My Gulay!
“Oh my Gulay!” is a Pinoy expression commonly used to present a feeling of shock, frustration, excitement, or surprise. It’s all in the delivery of the line I suppose, but I think that expression came about because of the playful rhyme. It’s all also very apt for this round as we’ve all gotten that look that Lasang Pinoy Onion is giving. Am I right? 😉
Lasang Pinoy was created to promote Filipino food. It all ties in together as vegetables are huge in the Philippines whether as a main dish or a side dish. I’m sure a lot of these dishes ring a bell — adobong kangkong, pinakbet, bulanglang, gising-gising, monggo guisado, dinengdeng, tortang talong, and all sorts of ginisang gulay (sayote, sitaw, ampalaya, you name it). Ah, you’re either drooling by now or shivering in your shoes depending on what relationship you have with these Pinoy veggie dishes.
We are inviting you to join this 18th round of Lasang Pinoy and share your favorite (or not so favorite) vegetable dish! It doesn’t have to be a typical Filipino recipe, but it would be great if it had that Pinoy flavor.
Post your entries in your blogs by May 30th and submit your URL to lasangpinoy-at-gmail.com or to tonitiu-at-gmail.com. If you don’t have a blog, just email me or Lasang Pinoy and we will host your posts for you. I’ll do a round-up shortly after May 30 right here in Wifely Steps.
Feel free to download the buttons for this round and use it on your sites. Just right-click on the image, choose “Save As…” and download. Thank you to ever-supportive H for designing them and for the Lasang Pinoy team for approving them. And thank you again to Lasang Pinoy for tapping me to host this round!
I look forward to reading about your vegetable recipes and stories (whatever genre it is, horror, romance, suspense?)! Bring on those veggie dishes!

May 29, 2007 at 2:07 pm (17 years ago)Hi! I started work on an entry a few days ago (planned what to cook, went shopping) but rereading your post, I just realized that my supposed entry subject is more Japanese than Filipino. Even the flavorings I’ll be using are Japanese (mirin, sake). I can probably whip something else up should this be an issue. Do you think it’ll stick out like a sore thumb? ^_^;;
Thanks in advance.
