I scream for Sebastian’s Blue Cheese Ice Cream!

by

Blue cheese has a very aggressive flavor. Its sharp taste and strongly aromatic characteristics make it polarizing. But what if blue cheese becomes an ingredient in ice cream? Does the ice cream tame down the tangy blue cheese properties? Could the saltiness of blue cheese marry well with the comfort of good old ice cream? The answers to that are: it is possible, yes, and YES. A quick trip to Sebastian’s, one of the most popular scooping stations in the metro, enthralled my senses with their blue cheese ice cream.

Once in a Blue Moon

Sebastian’s is known to push the envelope on ice cream flavors. While it offers a range of familiar tastes – chocolate and vanilla for example, the ice cream brand showers the classics with a twist so good they become a new generation of classics. Good old chocolate ice cream in the world of Sebastian’s is “Chocoholics Anonymous,” rich chocolate ice cream with dark chocolate chunks and a thick fudge swirl. Why settle for vanilla when you can go for “Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough,” vanilla ice cream with clusters of unbaked chocolate chip cookie dough with walnuts.

Their blue cheese ice cream is an innovative and imaginative ice cream flavor that simply catches your senses by surprise. Rich cheese ice cream is generously mixed with chunky blue cheese, then topped with walnuts and Palawan honey. The distinctly sharp blue cheese flavor was clearly identifiable, but it was impeccably tamed down in its ice cream form. It was truly one of a kind. If this ice cream were offered to you in a blind taste test, you’d most probably guess it was blue cheese ice cream as its flavor was so deliciously distinctive. The bold flavors made the ice cream border on becoming a savory dessert. This is a refreshing change from other ice cream flavors.

The walnuts added a good crunch to the snack, its bitterness taming down the aggressiveness of some blue cheese chunks. The honey’s sweetness blended well with the cheese ice cream’s saltiness, a perfect marriage in the ice cream world.

Blue Cheese Ice Cream with Walnuts and Honey

Sebastian’s blue cheese ice cream is called “Once in a Blue Moon.” This is because it is a limited edition artisan flavor. This means only a limited supply was shipped to each of its branches. Once it runs out, then you’re out of luck. Hopefully strong demand for the flavor would encourage the brand to make it a scooping station regular.

A scoop of “Once in a Blue Moon” with one topping costs P125. Double toppings cost P135. Sebastian has always been generous with their servings, so expect that a scoop could be good for two people. Try sharing the blue cheese ice cream first in case the flavor might be too strong for just you. The sharp flavors can get quite overwhelming as well if you don’t pace yourself while eating it. Nonetheless, eating “Once in a Blue Moon” is a lovely, indulgent treat. Go grab yourself a scoop before your nearest Sebastian’s scooping station runs out of it.

I had my first scoop of this wonderful ice cream flavor in the Podium branch today. It’s insanely good — terrific on its own but even better with the walnuts and honey.

The girl had to scrape the bottom of the container to fill my cup. I may have finished off Podium’s supply… Yikes!
