Falling in love at a coffee shop

by

I think that possibly, maybe I’m falling for you
Yes there’s a chance that I’ve fallen quite hard over you.

When at a loss for words, songs always come in and help define what you’re feeling, what you have to say. Cheers to brilliant songwriters. I came upon this song called “Falling in love at a coffee shop.” The title intrigued me. It was very visual, quite sensual actually. You can immediately imagine two strangers, or two long-time friends, talking over cups of coffee, the aroma of roasted coffee beans hanging in the air… then spark! Electricity shoots between them and there is a connection beyond friendship just made.

I’ve seen the paths that your eyes wander down
I want to come too

So I searched for the lyrics online, and spark! I fell in love with the song. It is sung by Landon Pigg, whose voice is calming and perfect to listen to on warm afternoons and that magical time when the sun’s just about the set.

I think that possibly, maybe I’m falling for you

And spark! The song transported me to a warm afternoon in June, 6 years ago. I was at a coffee shop with a friend I had just recently met. We were talking about and laughing over things I don’t remember. I do recall the conversation shifting to something more serious — dreams, aspirations. I talked about poetry like I never had with anyone. He talked about things he still wanted to pursue, spiritually and all. The more we bared our souls, the more we realized we were connecting in a weird, electric, awkward yet so comfortable way.

No one understands me quite like you do
Through all of the shadowy corners of me

Maybe I did begin to fall in love with him. At a coffee shop, yes. Or it could have been over games of Counterstrike that followed. But it all begin at that quaint little coffee shop. It was there that I saw a different look in his eyes, one that was more loving. It was really awkward. I was in a relationship, he was going on a date that evening.

I never knew just what it was about this old coffee shop
I love so much
All of the while I never knew

Over the next few weeks, the connection was way too palpable. We couldn’t understand why, but perhaps we were beginning to realize that maybe there really was something illogical to -spark!- love.

I never knew just what it was about this old coffee shop
I love so much
All of the while I never knew

So we walked on water. The connection that began at the coffee shop carried on through more conversations, more coffee and tea afternoons, giving us a deeper understanding of each other. And eventually, quickly, led to us realizing that we weren’t just in love with each other. We loved each other.

I’ve seen the waters that make your eyes shine
Now I’m shining too

We did fall in love at a coffee shop. We just didn’t know it yet. Or maybe we denied it because of the reality check we quickly did. But there was no denying that there was -spark!- something.

Because oh because
I’ve fallen quite hard over you

It’s amazing how much memories this song triggered for me. That coffee shop afternoon is still very vivid in my mind. I remember how he gazed at me. And I remember wanting to kick myself for beginning to like him so much. There are just some connections that can’t be doused.

If I didn’t know you, I’d rather not know
If I couldn’t have you, I’d rather be alone

I’m glad that we did make time for that coffee shop chat. If we hadn’t gone there, I wonder if we would’ve had the chance to still talk so intimately? It’s interesting how you make decisions along the way, not realizing how much a little “yes” or “no” can impact the rest of your life.

I never knew just what it was about this old coffee shop
I love so much
All of the while, I never knew

The “yes” to the coffee invitation was followed by “I do” several months later. And that’s most probably why this song connects with me so much. It reminds me of that warm June afternoon in a coffee shop, when two friends just getting to know each other began to fall in love. It reminds me of a fresh, new love, one that I continue to share with that friend — my husband.

All of the while , all of the while
It was you

i love, love the song :) i love coffeeshops. will i discover the love of my life holding a cup of coffee in a quaint coffee shop too? i hope so 😀

I hope so too! Coffee shops are so conducive to long conversations and there’s no pressure for a get-together to feel romantic. Perhaps that’s the charm and the magic it has.
