August is about Persuasion

by

The discussion from the Austenland entry was quite interesting. A lot of those who left comments had already started a love affair with Jane Austen’s work, the others looking for the right motivation to dive in. When witsandnuts suggested an online version of The Jane Austen Book Club, several of us went “Yeah! Why not?”

So ta-da! Thus was born our little online Jane Austen book club. We read one Jane Austen novel per month, and post our thoughts about the book in our blogs. Wits will do a monthly round-up, and even has some contests in store. Head on over to witsandnuts’ kick-off entry to learn more about our online Jane Austen Book Club.

We kick off the August carnival with Jane Austen’s last novel, Persuasion. I’m very excited! I haven’t read it yet. I do know it’s about Anne Elliot, who falls in love with Frederick Wentworth. But because of a difference in rank and status, she is forced to put a stop to their romance. Years later, she encounters Frederick again, who has then made a fortune and quite a name for himself. What happens next?

My gosh! The plot reminds me of the movie Before Sunset’s tag line: “What if you had a second chance with the one who got away?”

This will be an interesting read! Now will you be joining? 😉

I’ve downloaded the PDF file of Persuasion from the link at WitsandNuts. Yet to read it though. Somehow, it feels a lot better holding a book, flipping the pages, sitting by the lamp or curling in bed when you feel like it than staring at a computer screen and clicking Page Down. There’s still a month to go before deadline so let’s see. Maybe.

    Coincidence?
I’m reading persuasion right now. I’ve been reading it for months (still in chapter 6), because I’m having a hard time understand the words, etc.
But I do think that it’s very nice. (I read the last chapters when my sister bought it for me a year ago. I hate myself for reading the ending!).
Persuasion is light and is actually quite relaxing, compared to Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility.
Emma, too, is relaxing (I read the condensed version. I hate myself for that too)
    😀

Aw, don’t hate yourself! If the condensed version inspires you to read the fuller version, or if not so, at least spark an interest in you to read more Austen, then that’s fine I think! :)
