What the hell is that?!
That, my friend, was my favorite meal at Pancake House — the Roast Beef Sandwich. The sandwich is served open-faced, topped with roasted slices of beef and a very generous dressing of gravy. It is served with a scoop of mashed potatoes with a pat of butter on top. Perhaps to up the health quotient, they serve it with a side of vegetables. It is damn good.
It is also very sinful. I’ve been on a health kick lately, nurturing a love for salads. “Nurturing” because I don’t really like salads, so I’m on a quest to discover salads I can take. So when my family and I went to Pancake House, naturally, I ordered a salad.
This is the Asian Salad at Pancake House. It has iceberg lettuce, cubes of tofu, shrimp, pomelo and a sprinkling of cilantro. Delicious. Healthy and tasty, I enjoyed every bite! It’s great that more restaurants are adding meal options for the health-conscious onto their menu.
It looks pretty light but boy, I was so full afterwards. I liked the little kick the cilantro gave the salad. It tied the taste of the shrimp, pomelo and tofu together very well. I’ll definitely order this the next time we go back.
While I still gaze at the Roast Beef Sandwich wistfully, I just tell myself the salad is a much better choice. Healthy food doesn’t have to be lacking in taste. We just need to mix in a little creativity and even the plainest iceberg lettuce becomes mighty tasty.

September 26, 2006 at 8:31 pm (18 years ago)*drooooooooooool* I love their roast beef sandwich! I was at Pancake House yesterday and decided to order something else (their Spanish Omellete is blah, but the country sausage was good). Darn it, now I want to go back!
Have you tried Shakey’s Greek Salad? It’s also quite good.

September 27, 2006 at 12:05 am (18 years ago)I also love ordering the roast beef sandwich at Pancake House. I love the potato salad sidedish too. Infact, sometimes, I get an extra order of potato salad.

September 27, 2006 at 3:30 am (18 years ago)i have a salad for you:
– mixed greens (mesclun or spring mix)
– pomello or grapefruit sections (peeled)
– beets cut into small cubes
– shrimp or lobster (you can steam the lobster and remove from shell or shell the shrimp, place on an aluminum foil (with the sides folded up so the juices won’t spill) seasoned with salt and pepper and then toss in hot oven fir a bit – don’t overcook the shrimp!
after the shrimp/lobster cools, you can toss all ingredients together.
for a nice vinegrette:
– extra virgin olive oil
– balsamic vinegar (depends on how much you want)
– salt
– pepper
let me know if you try it! i love this salad – i dont mind eating it every day (if someone will make it for me haaahaaa!)

September 27, 2006 at 4:20 am (18 years ago)oh yummy! That first pic looks good, but just looking at it, I could already feel it sticking to my arteries
I’ve never been a salad eater either, I prefer cooked veggies if I have to eat healthy.

September 27, 2006 at 9:56 am (18 years ago)Since you’re in a health kick … try the letttuce with cooked beef, corn, potatoes, and carrots. Roll it chinese style and I can assure you that you will be full with just 3 rolls.

September 27, 2006 at 9:41 pm (18 years ago)yummy. been craving salads these days… CPK salads are always good, as are the ones in italiannis. people’s palace has a yummy pomelo salad, and cafe juanita’s as well. mario’s baguio has the absolute best caesar’s, they make it right before you. the heartland salads for delivery come up with pretty good ones (too bad they don’t deliver to paranaque).
sigh…i’m already drooling.
