Mare’s Challenge: That Teenage Crush

by

“Reveal your teenage crush and the reasons why.” – Mare

He was the only blue-eyed guy in their group. He was also the youngest. He has curly brown hair. He was born December 31, 1972. He had a really high voice when he joined the group and when the group disbanded, he already had a low grown-up voice. He was “Step 4” in the song “Step by Step.”

Can you guess who he is?

I was a huge NKOTB fan in my early teens. My bedroom was covered with NKOTB pin-ups, an NKOTB banner and my bath towel was NKOTB too! I had most of their albums in cassette tape format. I memorized all their songs. On Saturday afternoons, I’d watch Video Hit Parade on Channel 9 and wait for their music videos. When they came on, I’d press “Record” on the VHS and add that recorded video to my collection. My sisters were crazy over them too! My parents must have exercised a lot of patience with our NKOTB gushing back then.

My favorite New Kid was Joe. It must have been because he was the youngest in the group. Jordan and the rest of the guys seemed so old! A lot of girls also had crushes on Jordan and I didn’t like going for the group hearthrob. It also must have been the blue eyes. So Joe it was. While watching those music videos, I’d giggle and shriek a little bit during his close-ups. Those pin-ups around my room? Mostly Joe. I was a faithful Bop, 16, and Teen Beat reader just so I could soak up more info on him. I wrote a poem about him. I also wrote him fan letters but he never responded. It broke my teenybopper heart.

My crush on him faded when I decided I liked Ethan Hawke more. I was also outgrowing NKOTB’s music by then. So down came the Joe McIntyre posters and up went the Ethan ones.

It’s been more than ten years since I last swooned over him. Nevertheless, he brings a big smile to my face when my friends and I reveal our teenage crushes. I am reminded of those teenybopper afternoons when I listened to “Please Don’t Go Girl” on the cassette recorder again and again and again and again.

Wow! That really brought me back! Step 4…I can give you more:) I personally always liked Donnie, while my sister had the crush on Joe. Sigh…I used to tape all of their videos too, and I also had all of their merchandise, including t-shirts, posters, etc. I love reading your entries…they always make me think of my childhood/teenage years too! Sorry I haven’t written recently. I promise to write soon:)

hindi ako naka-relate, hahaha! i was a guns n’ roses girl and my forever crush (at that time) was axl rose. i never liked the boy band types (with the exception of Menudo, na lubos na pinagsisihan ko! haha!). so if we knew each other back then, i would have probablly rolled my eyes at you, hahaha! *peace*. siguro, ikaw naman would have been running away from the likes of moi!!

anyway, kakatuwa ito! 😀 can’t wait for your answer to the next challenge. 😀

Ako rin, nangongolekta ng Bop and Teen Beat magazines dati. Joe was cute but I was one of those Jordan groupies, probably because he was the lead singer 😉 Hmm, I think I still have their songs memorized! Uh-oh-oh, she’s my cover girl (I loved this song because during their concerts Donnie would pick a little girl from the audience and sing this to her)… Hangin’ tough, are you tough enough?… You’ve got the right stuff, baby… I’ll be loving you forever, just as long as you want me to be… Hahaha this entry brought back tons of memories. I loved loved *LOVED* NKOTB and I’m not ashamed of it! At least you moved on to a less teenybopper crush after NKOTB… IIRC my next big infatuation was Jonathan Brandis, hihi.
