Whenever you’re stressed at work, it’s said that having a focal point will ease anxieties. For mothers, a great focal point would be a picture of their children. I don’t have that at my workstation. My desk is full of paperwork to be read, calendars to be filled, but no pictures of my baby. I do, however, have this.

It’s a pen from my husband and my son. Engraved on it is the message “Love you Baba.” “Baba” is the first name my baby called me. It stuck as a term of endearment, and from time to time I’m referred to by my family as “Baba” when “Mommy” is not being used. Baba is more special to me as it was the first sound the baby made when he would call out to me or look for me.

This is my focal point. This is the pen I write with everyday, the pen I hold in my hands when I write my reports, strategies and plans. I like that when I need to relax I just turn the pen in my hands and see the special note engraved. It boosts my spirits and fuels me with energy, just enough to get through the day and make my way back home.

What’s your focal point at the office? What objects at your workstation help de-stress you?

I have an app called Vision Board on my iPhone. When it gets crazy in the office, I set it to “Play as Slideshow,” and prop the phone up next to my computer. Photos of what my heart’s dearest wishes rifle through slowly on my phone’s screen. It gives me the chance to slow down, breathe and remember that there is life—a rich, hopeful life—outside my cubicle. :)

Mine would be a picture of my son and I … it was a photoshoot and the sweetest moment was captured. It gives me energy to do more and be more at work.
