Vroom vroom before night night

by

Rituals matter to babies. They may seem mechanical to us grown-ups, but babies find routine comforting. The bedtime ritual is my favorite. Before bed, I wash Timmy up for bed, change him into his night clothes, read books with him, dim the lights, let him play with his cars and trucks, say good night to everyone at home, then nurse him to sleep. It’s like that on most nights.

Playing with his cars and trucks is a must. He’s turned part of our bed into a parking lot already.

Timmy's Parking Lot

Sometimes I put my head to my pillow and feel something bulky underneath. I reach under and pull out one of his trucks. He’s into stuffing his toys in nooks and crannies now. Underneath pillows and the sides of his playpen are his favorite hiding places. It’s so cute.

He once fell asleep holding on to his Ducati. I should’ve taken a picture. It was so adorable.

Some of my family and friends were surprised that I could play these vroom-vroom kind of games with the boy considering I grew up with dolls and all things pink. I love it that I’m discovering along with him how fun trucks and cars are. It brings us closer together even more.

Every time we go out, I have at least one toy truck in the baby bag. It’s great when he needs to be amused during a day out, especially during meal times.

At night before he sleeps he already knows it’s time for trucks again, even if he played with the same trucks in the morning and in the afternoon. Vroom vroom, we go again.

The best thing about this is he puts the trucks in one corner of the bed before he crawls to me for his bedtime snuggle. The vroom vrooms are parked in one corner of the bed, and then we say night night.

Sigh. I love having a baby.

With Matthew, it was trains. Thomas the Tank Engine mostly. I always brought little trains (sometimes little cars) too. Little boys are a wonder to me too. Wait til it’s time for pretend play! You’ll need to give it your all!

Both of my kids LOVED their night-time routines! Gum massage (which evolved into toothbrushing as they got older), diaper change, then into pajamas, read a book, then finally nursing to sleep.
My kids are now too old for diaper changes and nursing to sleep. I really miss those times when they were babies.
