“A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.” — William Shedd

This quote is too beautiful not to share with you.

When was the last time you set sail?

One of my goals this year is to get out of my comfort zone — to set sail. I didn’t accomplish much of that goal during the first half of the year, but hopefully I get to do so over the next six months of ’06.

Set Sail #1 is: Watch the World Cup with friends. I don’t know much about football, but when my friends invited me to watched a televised game one evening, I decided to give it a whirl. While they cheered and hollered, I was asking, “Um… what’s that yellow card for? What’s the diff with the red card? Is Beckham really that cute in action?! Why doesn’t his hair get messed up?” Hahaha. My best friend said, “You’re not into soccer.” And I said, “Exactly. I’m not into it that’s why I want to open my mind and see what it’s about. Who knows? I might like it. It’s better than saying I don’t like football without knowing what it’s about.” I can’t say I’m a die-hard football fan now, but I did enjoy watching the games!

Set Sail #2 is: Join a fitness class. While I’ve built a healthy relationship with working out, the treadmill is starting to bore me. The challenge I’m imposing on myself now is to join one of the fitness classes. Eek! I don’t like working out in a group because of my shyness and my lack of rhythm and coordination. I’m still psyching myself up for it. Hopefully I get to muster enough guts and join a class before June ends.

I have several other items on my list (travel, participate in cause-oriented activities, etc.) and I do hope to be able to set sail with them sometime. The safety of the harbor is comforting, but not as thrilling as being on the wide, open waters.

I believe I’ve done too much sailing in my lifetime that perhaps it’s time I settled down a bit just enough to grow roots. A good way of saying I need to save, save and save more before I sail off again. :)

the last time i set sail was when i left the comforts of my home and my parents – that was almost 5 years ago. it was rather difficult and rough at first, but i managed. we have all managed.

now, i feel i’m near to setting sail again, and i’m gladly looking forward to it.

hi. i had always been a silent reader of this blog but the current entry is just too pretty to continue enjoying it in silence. it is smart how you use sailing as metaphor to setting foot on water you have never tread before. but come to think of it. why just use sailing as metaphor? sailing could be out of your comfort zone but once you learn the physics of it, how the wind harnesses the rig, how the rig propels the hull, how the hull – with the lateral resistance of keel – pushes the boat forward, then you will truly enjoy the literal essence of setting sail. Anyway, keep up the good work if you must. Other blogs are entertaining. Yours is ennobling.

Everyone here is World Cup-crazy. I can’t relate! Tried to watch a game the other night but I’d rather play with the baby :)

I’ve set sail more times in the past year than I ever have in the 25 years before that!
