Juices for the Baby

by

OJ for the BabyThe first time Timmy drank orange juice, I crossed my fingers, hoping he’d like it. I was also waiting for that “sour” look on his face upon tasting this new thing. That look didn’t come though, as he just kept on drinking the orange juice as if he was drinking milk. *Nuninuninu, yumyum, BURP.* I was a bit puzzled, and he just looked at me as if saying, “What? What look are you waiting for?” Heehee. I was just happy that he lapped up his OJ on his first try, even wanting more! Good baby.

So far, he’s perfectly fine with OJ. He drinks two servings of OJ a day — two ounces of freshly squeezed and strained juice with two ounces sterilized water. The watch out with OJ is that sometimes little bits of pulp clog the nipple’s spout, making it difficult for the baby to suck. So, strain twice before putting the fresh juice into the bottle!

He’s now drinking fresh apple juice as well. I just threw in wedges of peeled apples into a juicer, poured the strained juice into his bottle and diluted it with sterilized water. Proportions, like the OJ, are 1:1.

We’re doing it one fruit or one vegetable a week first, to see how he reacts to each one. I’m excited to try carrot juice, cucumber juice, berry juice… weee!

We’re also introducing him to the sippy cup. My baby’s growing so fast. Soon we’ll be toasting glasses of milk together before bedtime. And then glasses of red wine on dinners out. Huh? What? Where does the time go?

Could you recommend any fresh fruit or vegetable juices for a 6-month-old? I’d love to hear them!

Hi Toni! I remember Aleksei drank carrot juice when he turned 6mos and above. Mama tried apples too. I just dont know if Timmy will like it but Aleksei enjoyed it. :)

Una loves pear juice. I don’t have a juicer so we bought those Gerber bottled juices. I also let her nibble on seedless oranges. It’s messy but your kid will appreciate the new texture and taste of the food. I introduced Una to fruits as early as 4 months, her dad only eats bananas and mangoes. Good thing I did, now she goes crazy whenever there are bananas and oranges on the table.

Hello! Been lurking for a few months every now and then. I think you’re doing a great job!

I have a 6.5 month old baby boy, almost the same age as your little one. He looooooves prune juice. I buy prunes with no preservatives, no added sugar, etc. Then I just extract the juice by mashing it with hot water. Then I strain it. Because I switched formulas when he turned 6 months, he had a little constipation issue. The prune juice worked wonders!

BTW, I live in Australia. Majority of carers here advise for bubs to stop using bottles (or at least start weaning them off) when they turn 1, as bottles promote tooth decay. Anyway, when my bub has water or juice, I always use sippy cup. He only uses the bottle for milk. This also helps bubba distinguish the 2. Just a thought…

Aaaah, interesting!!! I’ll try that. Thanks Jamie!

I don’t have a juice to recommend but I would recommend that you have him suck on shrimp … so that you can check for allergies.

wow! he’s already 6 months old?! time certainly flies!
my kids live on diluted apple juice. prune juice is also good to promote regularity.
my only advice – avoid juice in bottles. if he’s old enough to start drinking juice, he’s old enough to drink it from a sippy cup! (that’s straight out of my ped’s mouth and babycenter, and everyone else! lol)

    Good job, Timmy boy!

We gave Q apple juice when he was 6mo but he didn’t like it. He prefers water. And my pedia adviced us not to give citrus until 1yo. Maybe because we have a family history of allergies…

We give Q water in a sippy cup and it was a struggle at first but know he has the hang of it :)

Can you reco a good sippy cup? 😀

You’re doing a great job! When my kids were of the same age, we had them try out fresh fruit juice, too, like oranges and apples. But we also mix in a dash of honey. :)
