5 positive tests and I still wasn’t convinced! It took me a trip to the OB and an ultrasound to convince me that I was 100% pregnant. Throughout all the tests though, I was hoping, wishing, praying that I was! These positive tests make for great souvenirs.
Updates so far:
1. I never thought that being pregnant really sapped the energy out of you. At least for the first trimester, I’ve been told. I’d walk everyday for at least 20 minutes as mild exercise, but the rest of the time, I’m either sitting down or sleeping. I’ve been really tired and not much fun.
2. It’s ironic that I can now eat as much as I want without worrying much about gaining weight, but here I am not having any appetite at all. I still force myself to eat anyway for Timmy. But the hyperacidity, gas, nausea just turn me off food. I’ve discovered that eating an orange soothes my food worries. It helps me get rid of nausea and helps me work up an appetite.
3. Moving in slow motion takes some getting used to. I’m a really fast walker and a bit jumpy — literally jumping to my feet when I need to get something, stomping my feet when I’m excited. None of that now! Gentle movements are the way to go and I’m still trying to get used to it. The good thing is I feel more “zen” with my slo-mo ways.
4. “What To Expect When You’re Expecting” is a great companion. This book really is wonderful. I bought it right after my first ultrasound. I’ve been reading it almost everyday since then. I learn something new each time I read it. Really awesome! Thanks to all those who recommended this book.
5. My clothes still fit me, so I’m trying to maximize them while they still fit me well! My jeans still fit me comfortably. My work tops are getting a bit snug and show of my little bump a bit, but are still comfortable. I can tell that in a few weeks, I’d have to say bye-bye to my clothes. And I wonder when I’ll get to wear them again! For now, I’ll try to max out my wardrobe and then wear my looser tops when I grow a little bit more horizontal.
6. Superstitions and old wives’ tales are amusing but can get annoying sometimes. I’ve already had my share of “Don’t eat from her plate! You’ll get sleepy!” and stuff like that. I’d think, what a waste of food then. There was one incident that I wanted to share some extra food I had and it went to waste because nobody wanted to eat it! Sheesh. Sayang ang pagkain. I’m not fond of old wives’ tales, so when I’m faced with situations like this, I just let them go in one ear and out the other. If it works for others, let them work for others.
7. Cravings and food aversions are so unpredictable! And so funny. Right now I’m craving bacon and kimchi. I’ve been craving it all weekend. I’ve been hating Chinese food and anything with cabbage. I didn’t realize cabbage had a particular scent and it drives me nuts!
8. Books are great, but learning from other mothers is just as wonderful. I really enjoy interacting with my Mom friends from Plurk, the blog world, my dear friends, my mom-in-law and of course, my own Mama. The support is amazing and always fun. I’ve been learning a lot from them!
9. A lot of people are saying I’ll be having a girl based on what I’ve been eating, how I look, their gut feel, etc… I say, let’s see! I’m amused by the many theories on how to tell a baby’s gender. So far, more are saying I’ll have a girl. H is over the moon, of course! I honestly can’t wait to find out Timmy’s gender. So exciting!
10. Grab catnaps when you can!!! Going back to #1, your body’s working double-time now hence the lack of energy. I still haven’t mastered the art of napping during my lunch hour, but I sure do nap a lot when I’m home or during car rides.
So far, so good. I hope these ten things also help others who are newly pregnant or plan to get pregnant. Keep those tips coming, too! I’m learning a lot and filing them in my head while I can still remember stuff! I read that forgetfulness comes with being pregnant, uh-oh! So far, I haven’t been absent-minded yet. I think.
Now, who’s got some bacon?

February 9, 2009 at 11:38 am (15 years ago)In an ideal world, it would be good to take the whole 9 months as a maternal leave from work. But since it isn’t so, make the most out of the lively, busy world out there. We’re as thrilled and as happy now that you are expecting the coming bundle of joy.

February 9, 2009 at 12:07 pm (15 years ago)Enjoy the ride, Toni! The first trimester is a rollercoaster with a jumble of different emotions but it’s worth it!
And yes, you should really rest whenever you can as your body is working overtime for the baby.
You might also want to subscribe to websites like http://www.whattoexpect.com, http://www.babycenter.com, http://www.babyzone.com for weekly updates.
And I, too, have been bingeing on bacon for the past few days. I’ve had it for breakfast almost everyday w/ eggs and my favorite, fried rice w/o garlic! :p

February 9, 2009 at 7:13 pm (15 years ago)hi! de-lurking again.
i just want to second the suggestion for you to join babycenter.com. that’s a very useful site. i still check it out even if my daughter is already a toddler. comparing notes with your fellow moms in your birthclub is a big help.
do you pee a lot already? aside from the nausea, peeing a lot was a constant in my pregnancy. a single trip to the bathroom yields two pees! peeing before and after brushing my teeth was a norm and a toothbrush session is normally what…2 minutes?
enjoy the ride!

February 9, 2009 at 11:55 pm (15 years ago)Hi Toni! It’s so exciting to read about you all excited for baby Timmy. Have you started his/her blog yet? Funny what you said about craving for kimchi, but having an aversion for cabbage…? diba Kimchi IS cabbage! or at least made up of (chinese) cabbage. I had a korean room mate when I fist got to UK, and she would prepare kimchi, and let it ‘ferment’ in a basin, and stash it away in a corner of the room (sometimes even under her bed!), and maaaaan!!! the smell! the smell! himatay! but of course it was gooood! i’m sure this cabbage aversion will be temporary. Hope you had a great, relaxing weekend! =)

February 10, 2009 at 12:47 am (15 years ago)#6: Not true! I wasn’t at all sleepy the last time. But then again I only drank your water. The next time you come here, I will eat from your plate. What’s wrong with being sleepy anyway?

February 10, 2009 at 5:39 am (15 years ago)Sa office namin, we have three pregnant women, and even though I don’t get to interact with them because of my busy schedules, I love it when they get to eat too much, and stuff their already big tummies, hehehe. I just don’t believe in old wive’s tales, but I really can’t afford to be sleepy now, i will sure get a spanking when i sleep all those readings off.

February 11, 2009 at 2:50 pm (15 years ago)It’s good that you’re having all the support and help you can get from relatives and friends. That will definitely make the load lighter. And I can definitely relate with the slowmo thing. I remember I used to get up from bed always in haste, forgetting that I was heavy with a baby. Hubby was the one who kept reminding me to slow down.

Show naman a photo of you with your preggy tummy then perhaps i can make a guess on whether you’re having a girl or a boy!
Perhaps you can have a contest on the baby’s gender. It’ll be fun!
