Raising a happy reader (Part 3): Book fair and bookstore visits

by

Read Raising a Happy Reader Part 1 here, Part 2 here.

My sisters and I grew up with a reading culture at home: books were in every room, and everyone could easily pick up a book and start reading. It wasn’t unusual to find a family member reading in the kitchen, another reading in the living room, and others in various parts of the home with various reading materials — comic books like Archie, novels by Sidney Sheldon, tween reads like Sweet Valley Twins… Yup, we are a family of readers. (We’ve got the bad eyesight to prove it too.)

Book fairs thrill us immensely, and so the Manila Book Fair is an annual event we always look forward to. It’s been a tradition to bring Timmy ever since he was one year old. Last September, it was wonderful getting to hang out with my boy at the fair. He was so excited!

At the book fair, everytime Timmy would see a book he likes he’d read it on the floor. He liked a lot of books but the ABC book (lower right corner) won his heart. I love my bookworm!

Reading a book in every shop that caught his fancy.

Raising a happy reader: Bring him to bookstores and book fairs!

Bookstores are a must when we’re at malls. When we ask Timmy, “Bookstore or toys?” He’d always say, “Bookstore!” We do end up going to the toy store too, but his giddiness when entering a bookstore is unparalleled.

We were at National Bookstore one time. He walked towards a huge bookshelf full of children’s books. He looked up and down, then said, “Wow…”

He also does a little happy dance when in various bookstores. Such a cutie pie! I love that we’re raising a happy reader!

A lot of this has to do with the way my sisters and I grew up. A lot of my favorite childhood memories involve books. My grandfather reading a mystery novel in their breakfast area. Summer afternoons, with me climbing the bookshelf to grab several volumes of The Book of Knowledge. Sitting in front of my parents’ open bookshelf, wondering if I should try Danielle Steel or Harold Robbins (I was 12).

Raising a happy reader is one of the many joys of parenting. I’m looking forward to more bookstore and book fair visits with my son! I hope that when he too grows up, a lot of his cherished childhood memories involve the wonderful world of reading.

I love Sweet Valley High and Twins too. Hehe. Too bad I wasn’t able to bring Lucas to the SMX book fair :( I hope we can catch it next time. :)

I love how concentrated he is with his books. Alon has the same face when reading his books. I’m glad he seems to enjoy “reading” as well. :)
