Mommy’s here: Words of Comfort

by

“Mommy’s here. Mommy’s here.” I want to say that to my son for as long as I can.

My 3-year-old’s been sick the past few weeks, having caught the cough and cold bug of the season. His cough wouldn’t go away for a week so we had to use a nebulizer. This machine scares him because of the loud humming sound it makes. But we had to nebulize him so his cough would go away.

Last Sunday night, he was shrieking, screaming and running away from the nebulizer. He’s usually a trooper when it comes to nebulizing, but that night was just so difficult. He didn’t nap that day, which could have added to his irritation. His play was also interrupted because it was time for nebulizing. Add it all up and the sound of the machine could have been amplified. And so he shrieked and screamed. My poor boy.

When the ordeal was over, I took him in my arms and hugged him tight. I rubbed his back up and down, whispering softly in his ear. “It’s okay, baby. Mommy’s here. Mommy’s here.” His shouts quieted down, his breaths became calmer.

“It’s okay, baby. Mommy’s here. Mommy’s here.” I said it over and over until his tears were dry, until he loosened his arms around me.

5 minutes later he was singing his ABCs and playing again, as if nothing had happened earlier.

Comfort words: Mommy’s here…

One of the best parts of being a Mommy is knowing you can comfort your children like nobody else can. I love that he can run to his aunts, grandparents and his father when he wants to. When he runs to me, I feel like a superhero. All I’m thinking at that point is “Let’s make this better, baby boy.” Then I scoop him in my arms and whisper words of comfort.

I think I say them out loud for myself too. It pains me to see my son in pain so while the words are ultimately for my son, I find comfort in saying them out loud too.

They’re words I hope he finds comfort in no matter how old he is.

Mommy's here.

Wherever you go Timmy, and no matter what, Mommy’s here. Mommy’s always here. Forever. For always.

awwww. hope you feel better soon Timmy! Maia used to be super scared of the sound of the nebulizer too. But she outgrew it. Now she even holds the mask herself. But yes, regardless of whether they outgrow a fear, my wish is the same as yours…that she always find comfort in my presence/words of encouragement.

He’s been on the nebulizer for more than a week but he hasn’t eased up on the shrieks and screams. :( I wish I could just take away all his discomfort and absorb them on my own, kahit 10x pa!

Thanks for sharing this, Toni! I was brought to tears thinking about how we went through a similar situation recently. I like the thought that we, moms, also say the words to ourselves. I think it’s during those moments we realize, “Yes, we can do this. I’m a mom, I’m a MOM.” Know what I mean? :)

Yup, I totally know what you mean. We have to be strong for the little ones, no matter how weakening their pain can be for us too!

I always wonder why children always wants the mother and why not the father. My two kids are very clingy on me even though my husband would want some of their hugs and kisses too. Maybe the breastfeeding part gave too much attachment to the mother and the child. I felt a tinge of sorry for my husband every time my two kids want my embrace and my hubby is left alone with no one, hehehe…

I’m sure your hubby is needed by the kids in some other way. :)

So sweet… Its sad to think that there will really come a time when our kids will no longer ask for our help, or choose not to tell us that they are having problems. If we can only rescue them all the time. :(

I don’t even want to think about that! :( But for as long as they know we’re always here, that’s what matters I guess :)

I can so relate to this post, Toni! Thanks for sharing your experience with Timmy. Both the older kids just ended their nebulizing sessions two weeks ago – at least they’re not scared of the nebulizer anymore, unlike before. I think they were about Timmy’s age too. Thank God, too, for breastfeeding – Baby Anne didn’t catch the bug her Kuya and Ate had! :) *Hugs* to you, my “classmate” in Sleep-Deprived 202! Ha, ha!

Just this morning, while my 3 year old was holding her doll to her chest, I heard her whisper to her doll “Mommy’s here. Mommy’s here.” She must have picked that up from me.

    Get well soon Timmy!

Thanks Aimee! His cough and colds came back because of the strong rains. Boohoo.

That’s so cute about your little girl! Goes to show how much love and nurturing she gets from you it overflows into how she cares for her own toys :)

I’ve downloaded all his favorite TVCs (all shampoo commercial) and play them on while he is nebulizing. What a good way to distract him. 😀

It’s comforting for us moms to know how our children find comfort in us. That is especially so while I was a work-out-of-home-mom.

That’s so true, ceemee. I’m thankful that I’m able to be there for him in that way while I work away from home.
