Delight in the moment

DELIGHT in the moment.

What’s the difference between time flying by and time creeping by? Delight. When you’re in the moment, engaged in delight, everything has a purpose. Everything feels like it matters more.

Delight is a perspective I should adopt more often. To look at things with delight. To do things with delight. To delight in the moment.

One situation that pops in my head is when my son plays with his toys. Last night, he was pitting a Lego Gorilla versus a Lego Lion. He was making animal sound effects, complete with “whoosh!” and “boom!”.  I could see the genuine delight in his eyes as he crashed the two figures against each other.

“Mommy! Play with me!,” he begged, thrusting a Lego Gorilla in my hand. I was into the game in the beginning, doing whoosh and boom sounds too. But later I found myself getting distracted, thinking of my work e-mail and some unfinished household chores. It was obvious that I wasn’t in the moment. “Mommy!,” he called again, pulling me back in the moment.

I brushed off my thoughts and began taking on the role of Lego Gorilla more wholeheartedly. We have so much to learn from kids! Timmy enjoyed his playtime more, genuinely delighted by the joy it brings. He reminded me to delight in the moment, to leave to-do list worries behind as we played and bonded together.
