Book Review: The Nesting Place

The Nesting Place isn’t your typical home decorating resource. It’s much more than that — more relatable, more soulful, more inspiring. Popular blogger and self-taught decorator Myquillyn Smith shares her stories on finding beauty in the imperfect. She shares practical advice and encouraging stories on how you can create the home you’ve always wanted, by simply embracing your own style, your own stories, your own imperfections. After all, it’s in your home’s imperfections that you’ll find how much character your home has after all.

Myquillyn’s storytelling was so lovely. I felt we were seated on her very much loved and lived-in couch, with me eagerly listening to her every story. I wouldn’t even be afraid if a little of my coffee would spill on her couch because she makes you feel so comfortable. Yes, the book makes you feel so comfortable! You’ll learn how to create your own style without worrying things don’t balance out, that you’re spending more than you should (because you won’t be breaking the bank!), or that your curb isn’t as gorgeous as your neighbors’. Nope. You’ll be so compelled to get started decorating your own house according to your own rhythm and your own character.

After reading her book, it made me realize how much character our past homes had. Since we married and lived together, my husband and I moved homes four times. There was the apartment in Sta. Mesa we rarely stayed in, the cozy 1-bedroom in Makati that we moved out of because it becoming more cramped than cozy, the 3-bedroom loft in Mandaluyong that was too big for us but housed a lot of our stuff, and another 3-bedroom loft in the same building. Because we were renting, we couldn’t do much decorating. I didn’t want to make big commitments to the spaces either. Now I wish I had. I wish I had The Nesting Place with me then, for I’m certain the book would have given me the courage to make the places more homey even if we were renting.

We now live in my parents’ place in Quezon City. While we love being part of an even bigger family, the downside is we have significantly less space. The book inspired me to find beauty in our little cove at home though! I took a baby step in transforming our space. After reading the book, I repurposed a vertical bedroom shelf as the second layer of our bedside bookshelf. Look!

TURN A CABINET SIDEWAYS

It used to look like this:

Good Night Sleep Tight!
{Wah! Clutter!}

The cloth drawers of the shelf surprisingly fit portions of our bigger bookshelf. So awesome! Just turning the shelf sideways made for more space in our bedroom, and it gave me an added organizer too. It was a blessing that both shelves were white. Woohoo! Thanks to Myquillin for helping me see the promise in the little things around our home.

I super love this book. I’m definitely recommending this book to you! The Nesting Place is such a lovely read. The only downside to my own reading was that I couldn’t see the beautiful pictures in the book. I use an old version of Kindle so the pictures wouldn’t display. So if you’re reading this via an e-book reader, it’s best that you have one in color so you can see the pictures. :)

Looking forward to reading more of Myquillyn’s work! Good thing she’s a blogger so I can follow her posts regularly. She blogs at Nesting Place (http://www.thenester.com/).
