The truth [is] that there is only one terminal dignity-love. And the story of a love is not important-what is important is that one is capable of love. It is perhaps the only glimpse we are permitted of eternity.
~ Helen Hayes
When one shares the news that she is engaged, there’s almost always a squeal of delight that follows, with the question “So how did it happen!?” immediately thrown in. There are various marriage proposal stories — the grand, the simple, the unexpected, the mutual agreement. There is no one way to propose to a woman (or a man). The best marriage proposal is one that fits both parties perfectly, one that suits both personalities.
When one follows no mold in a marriage proposal, it makes popping the question sweet, and the answer even sweeter.
Here are the entries to the Marriage Proposals Blog Carnival.
Nine years ago, my boyfriend and I were at my house, my parents’ house, watching tv. Then out of the blue, he blurted out, “Let’s get married.”*
I looked at him, aghast. “What?”*
He held my hand. “Let’s get married.”*
“Ha?”* I couldn’t believe what I was hearing…
Magoo shares her fiance-turned-husband’s account of that special day in The Secret Can Now Be Told:
Who doesn’t love a good scavenger hunt? Well today, NYC is our playground, and although it will be tiring and cold, I guarantee you will like where the day (and night) will lead you!
So here are the rules – you will be searching for a series of clues scattered around the city. The clues will be stored in plastic fluorescent hi-liter cases so they don’t get wet or damaged. Clues will come in two parts and are color-coded.
Aileen Apolo shares three proposals styles on The Proposal:
So is there any formula for the perfect proposal? Nah, I don’t think so. I think the secret is just to ask from the heart and being sincere. So, if you have doubts, then don’t even think about asking!
Meeya shares an entire Wifespeaks entry on Yes Times Ten:
Read how Kitts talks about the beginning of the end (haha!), how Mai opens her eyes to her brand new pair of jeans, how Jeanny writes about her soon-to-be-hubby not knowing her ring size, how Miuccia tearfully says yes twice while I, on the other hand, said no for three or so weeks, about Star’s boat-blurt-blooper, about Meldita’s mom’s wish finally getting fulfilled, about how it was almost-a-decade-in-the-making for Marie, about who is to blame for SimplyMe’s soon-to-be-hubby’s wrinkles, and about Nel’s Bebi’s sarap to the bones press release.
Jo shares her future sister-in-law’s story in Marriage Proposal:
R emerged from the SUV parked beside my car. He was holding a bouquet of red roses and, sweating like crazy, seemed to have lost at least 5 lbs in the process of waiting to surprise me. He gave me the bouquet and whipped out a sheet of rolled bond paper from his back pocket…
Dhanggit writes her proposal story set amidst a beautiful recipe in When Romeo Proposed to Juliet: The Art of Making Banana Crepe with Chocolate Sauce:
Romeo & Juliet despite their racial differences (he is white, she is brown) have plenty of things in common that binds their relationship: that is their love and passion for travelling & Japan. Their love for each other have survived long distance and cultural differences crisis. Juliet never imagined that summer night promenade with Romeo in Odaiba will be the day she said “I do”.
I, Toni, have a whirlwind romance proposal, which I write about in My Marriage Proposal Story.
The traffic was expectedly terrible, but the tension in the car took a turn for the unexpected. H looked at me, gazed deep into my eyes and asked, “Will you marry me?”
Too soon, too soon, I thought. So right, so right, another voice whispered. The practical side of me was kicking me in the shins, the romantic throwing petals in the air. What do I do? What do I say? That this is all too fast? That I am too young?
Mary’s Mom recounts her story of that wonderful proposal dinner and shares a capture of her gorgeous ring in Did I Say Yes?:
On that cold night, after dinner, while watching “The Bicentennial Man” on cable, he tells me to close my eyes, threw a kitchen towel over my head to make sure I was not peeking, he proposed.
Last but not least, bestselling author Neil Gaiman helps with a marriage proposal during the recent Philippine Advertising Congress. Lucky man Jason tells of his creative proposal in The Proposal c/o Neil Gaiman:
So I think it’s apt that I label what I did as my “What If?” moment. Because, to propose to my lovely girlfriend Maui, I asked the following:
“What if I could get Neil Gaiman, our most fave author and fantasy writer, to help propose to her?”
Read about his fiancee’s account (and video!) here. Even Neil Gaiman said it was his favorite part of the Ad Congress.
What greater thing is there for two human souls that to feel that they are joined… to strengthen each other… to be at one with each other in silent unspeakable memories.
~ George Eliot

December 17, 2007 at 8:20 pm (16 years ago)I still remember what I told my sweetheart then when I made my proposal to her—“I do not promise you never-ending love…. I guarantee it!”
It worked and still is. You see at our age, we still hold hands together wherever we go. That’s our only way of protecting ourselves from falling due to arthritic pains!
