On Martial Arts & Marriage

by

Every weekend morning, my husband kisses my son and I goodbye to pursue a long-time hobby of his: martial arts. He’s been into his training for a couple of years now. It’s a Saturday morning routine I know not to combat with. It is, after all, a passion of his.

Kali Basic Knife Sparring: Guro Jeric Pantaleon & Dennis Tiu

Martial Arts & My Husband

That’s my husband and his friend doing Kali basic knife sparring in the video. I understand that Kali is Filipino martial arts, the oldest one at that. His friend is a teacher at Combat Kali Manila, where they teach Filipino kickboxing, stick fighting, knife fighting, dumog (Filipino submission wrestling) and practical self-defense (like handling hostage situations, robbery, death threats, sexual harassment, etc.)

My husband and I don’t have a shared hobby. But we’re big supporters of each other’s hobbies! I support his love for martial arts, and he supports my love for blogging.

I’m super proud of how much my husband has accomplished with his martial arts. He’s doing this more for learning than for eventually teaching martial arts, and I love how he’s so passionate about learning this super awesome art. He’s come home with a cut above his eye or bruises on his arms — causes of alarm for me, badges of his hard work for him. I’ve tempered the way I’d react to these little martial arts souvenirs, but I still get alarmed.

My husband’s hobbies are mostly on the active side — working out, playing sports, martial arts. My hobbies border on the passive — reading books, blogging, writing. The one thing we have in common is walking. Before we had a tot in tow, we’d walk a lot. We’d walk everywhere. It’s harder with a 3-year-old now! It should be something we revive and do together.

So every Saturday morning, I know not to pester my husband with other plans. Well, I still do, even if I know it’s a lost battle. πŸ˜› I don’t really mind though because martial arts is a passion of his, and he spends the rest of the weekend with me and Timmy. Someday he’ll teach Timmy some basic moves and we’ll sign him up for a formal martial arts class. That would be super awesome, and I know my husband will be mighty proud of our boy. For now, I’m mighty proud of my husband! Hence his first appearance on my blog, doing his martial arts thing. :) Go, Husby!

Oh the trials of a wife trying to convince the husband of some other plans… but to no avail, haha! I think I’m gradually learning to give way to my husband’s hobbies and passions because he comes out a better hubby/dad after his “me” time :-)

I so agree! I’ve observed the same thing, how my husband is in a better mood, in better spirits when coming home from lessons. If he misses out, he gets cranky!

I get quite alarmed as well when my hubby comes home from playing basketball and he has bruises on his arms or legs. I know it is a physical game but I still get anxious.

For one, I believe he is too ‘old’ na to play basketball and second I know he pushes himself too much just to stay fit. At least he makes an effort to stay in shape while me I rather stay indoors and not melt away in a sweaty puddle. πŸ˜€ I don’t have to exert much effort as merely climbing down the stairs to go to our kitchen, I’m perspiring na. And no it isn’t a long staircase ha! hehehe

Naku Daph, that’s so true! At least our husbands are doing something to be in good health. We should be inspired by them. πŸ˜€ It’s hard though. Hahaha! πŸ˜€
