Every weekend morning, my husband kisses my son and I goodbye to pursue a long-time hobby of his: martial arts. He’s been into his training for a couple of years now. It’s a Saturday morning routine I know not to combat with. It is, after all, a passion of his.
Kali Basic Knife Sparring: Guro Jeric Pantaleon & Dennis Tiu
Martial Arts & My Husband
That’s my husband and his friend doing Kali basic knife sparring in the video. I understand that Kali is Filipino martial arts, the oldest one at that. His friend is a teacher at Combat Kali Manila, where they teach Filipino kickboxing, stick fighting, knife fighting, dumog (Filipino submission wrestling) and practical self-defense (like handling hostage situations, robbery, death threats, sexual harassment, etc.)
My husband and I don’t have a shared hobby. But we’re big supporters of each other’s hobbies! I support his love for martial arts, and he supports my love for blogging.
I’m super proud of how much my husband has accomplished with his martial arts. He’s doing this more for learning than for eventually teaching martial arts, and I love how he’s so passionate about learning this super awesome art. He’s come home with a cut above his eye or bruises on his arms — causes of alarm for me, badges of his hard work for him. I’ve tempered the way I’d react to these little martial arts souvenirs, but I still get alarmed.
My husband’s hobbies are mostly on the active side — working out, playing sports, martial arts. My hobbies border on the passive — reading books, blogging, writing. The one thing we have in common is walking. Before we had a tot in tow, we’d walk a lot. We’d walk everywhere. It’s harder with a 3-year-old now! It should be something we revive and do together.
So every Saturday morning, I know not to pester my husband with other plans. Well, I still do, even if I know it’s a lost battle. 😛 I don’t really mind though because martial arts is a passion of his, and he spends the rest of the weekend with me and Timmy. Someday he’ll teach Timmy some basic moves and we’ll sign him up for a formal martial arts class. That would be super awesome, and I know my husband will be mighty proud of our boy. For now, I’m mighty proud of my husband! Hence his first appearance on my blog, doing his martial arts thing. Go, Husby!
