Leap of Faith: Searching for bravery

Leap of Faith

So I’ve been thinking.

I’ve been thinking of taking a leap of faith this year. An exciting one. But I don’t know how to go about it yet. But it excites me. The thought exhilarates me. I feel like I’m standing on the edge of a cliff, scared to bits by what I’ll dive into but eager to feel the thrill of taking a chance.

But I’m scared. Because one change leads to another, and another, and another, a domino effect in life that begins to make me step farther and farther away from the edge of the cliff till the beautiful crashing waves of the unknown are no longer seen, just heard.

Have you ever felt that way? Do you feel that way now?

Take a chance. Take a leap of faith.

My aunt became a nurse at around 50 years old. Before that she worked in various fields. I recall she worked in an insurance agency. Then she became a nurse, and a really good one too. A friend is in finance. And now she wants to reinvent her life and dive into children’s speech therapy because she finds it inspiring. “It’s never too late to go after what you want,” she said. She’s turning 40 this year.

No one's too young or old to take a leap of faith!
No one’s too young or old to take a leap of faith!

Here’s the thing. I know I can be better than what I am today. I’m happy, but I know I can be happier and make others happier too. :) I know I can do better for others than where I am today. I believe I can make better use of my talents and skills by moving forward from where I am today. I know it. I believe it. I feel it.

I want it.

Have you ever felt that way? How did YOU take the plunge into the unknown?

Maybe it’s about writing your own epitaph. Then you’d be able to more frankly evaluate whether you’re living your best life. Or not.

I’d love to hear from you. I’d love to hear stories that inspired you. If you share my fears, let’s connect over e-mail and give each other strength to “start all over again”. If you’ve conquered this and jumped off into the unknown, please share your story! Bravery can be contagious.

I really don’t know if my story can qualified as an example of a leap of faith. But I will share it anyhow. 😀
You see I’m one of the (few?) women who didn’t believe in marriage. I felt it would merely curtail my freedom. I had many plans so being married would merely thwart them. In other words, I was selfish.

Well as it happens I found the right person to grow old with. Yet even at the ripe old age of 38 I wasn’t ready to take that plunge. I came up with a lot of excuses even to the point where I suggested he was perhaps better off with someone else. But he was persistent.

So 6 months shy of my 40th birthday, we got hitched. Yes for me I guess “Life did begin at 40”, after all. Not that I wasn’t living to the fullest for 39 years. But you get my drift.

My tips for taking a giant leap of faith are to pray for guidance, don’t let negativity take over, then take 3 deep breaths and jump with a big smile on your face. It certainly doesn’t hurt, there is no pain involved, and most of all it is extremely liberating. =)

Thank you for the tips, Daphne! Can I wear a life jacket when I take the plunge? 😛

Ahhh, this is one of my favourite topics, Toni. :)

I’m a fan of taking leaps of faith. There are big ones and small ones, but both give tremendous changes in one’s life. Two of my biggest leaps of faith are marriage and moving to another country on my own. Marriage because when I was in my 20s, I was very happy being single–I wasn’t the commitment type of person. But coming across my Husband changed all that. Moving to another country was another big deal because it meant having to start all over again, getting settled, finding a new job, learning about another culture, etc.

When taking that leap of faith, I acknowledge my fears. I use those fears to think of possible challenges that may come my way. Then I put those fears aside because I focus on taking that leap of faith. I envision the good things that will come out of it. I look forward to the change it’ll bring to me.

That quote by CS Lewis is something I strongly believe in. There is no age when it comes to dreaming. So let’s dream away and take that leap of faith. :)

Thank you, Ibyang, for sharing that wonderful and inspiring story. In my case, I’ve always taken leaps of faith when it comes to love. Haha! I just jump and jump and jump. I applaud you for taking the moving-out-of-the-country leap of faith. That’s one of the things I’ve always wanted to do but am really too scared to try. Are you still looking towards taking more leaps of faith? You’re one brave woman!

I’ve been wanting to take this specific leap of faith too and I’m scared to death. Sometimes I wonder what’s the braver choice — to be reckless and pursue what you really want, or to stay put or settle down because lives are dependent on you. My email is attached on this comment, Toni! Tell me how you’re going to take your leap of faith. I want to be inspired! :)

Hi Riz! Yes, I shall let you know once I’ve taken more active steps towards that leap of faith. I’m still quite scared. I’m still shuffling my feet at the moment, haha, still scared to just jump. I will soon. And I will let you know about it! Thank you!
