Here’s how to make it.

Homemade Dulce de Leche Recipe

First, you need one can of sweetened condensed milk, with the label taken off. No other ingredient is needed.

Other things you need: water, a pot large enough that when you fill it with water the can would be submerged, and your gas/electric stove. And also, patience.

Good things come to those who wait.

Here’s what you do:

  • Place the can of condensed milk at the bottom of the pot.
  • Pour water into the pot so it covers the can. See that you get about 2 inches of water above the can.
  • Bring water to a boil, then let simmer and cook covered for 2 to 3 hours. (We find that 2 hours is enough, but this would depend on how hot your stove is.)
  • Make sure the pot is ALWAYS filled with water. Don’t let it run dry, otherwise the can will overheat and explode.
  • When done, cool, open the can and enjoy.

Tips on preparing and keeping this decadent delight:

  • You can also boil an unopened can in a pressure cooker for 30 to 45 minutes.
  • If you’re doing this on a stove, be extra careful. Don’t let the pot boil dry, otherwise the can will overheat and explode. I’ve said this earlier but can’t stress this enough.
  • Keep this refrigerated when not in use.

It’s so delicious. I have it as a treat after dinner. Two teaspoons and that’s it. I’ve met my naughty dessert indulgence quota. On some days though, the homemade dulce de leche sings to us and we find ourselves scooping teaspoonfuls of this decadent sauce on banana slices, ice cream or on a piece of toasted bread.

Instant yema! Agree! :) Timmy doesn’t like it much, which is actually a relief for me. His only weakness when it comes to sweets is chocolate. The less sweets, the less chances of toothache. Heehee.

Omigosh NOM NOM NOM! I love this stuff! We used to make this when we were kids — brings back so many memories. Except I believe our version used the double boiler method, which was slow. I like the idea of using the pressure cooker! Will definitely try this (while my thighs weep).

ahhhh this is my husband’s fave dessert. we recently introduced it to the little miss and we all agree that spreading it on salty Fita biscuits is the best way to eat it. Hihi. Gotta get me a few cans of condensed milk for this weekend! 😀
