Height chart for kids: Making memories

by

How do you keep track of how tall your kids are getting? Do you make pencil marks on the back of a door or on the kitchen wall? That’s what we do. Every year, on Timmy’s birthday, we take out a marker and measure how much our little boy has grown.

Timmy’s Height Chart on the Kitchen Wall

What I love about this is that we mark it consistently every time he turns a year older. And my, oh my, how much this little boy has grown.

Height Chart Memories

There are a lot of stories we associate with this chart. Every year it takes a big amount of distraction to get Timmy to stand still. He gets curious about why we’re making him stand against a wall. He keeps looking up and around, swatting the pencil away from our hands as we try and measure him.

If there’s one thing I’d change about this height chart, I would have made the markings on the kitchen door and not the kitchen wall. What if we had to move homes? Do I take a slab of wall with us? What if the wall needs to be repainted? Ah, hindsight. If we had made the marks on the kitchen door, we could just take the kitchen door off its hinges and take it with us wherever we’d move to!

When I pass by this height chart in the kitchen, I always get amazed by how much and how fast my son is growing. I still remember proudly sharing that “He’s coming up to my thighs!” then “He’s just below my belly button!” and now, “He’s right below my chest!” Oh man. Soon he’ll be towering over me and I’ll be the one right below HIS chest. (Oh, my little boy. You’ll forever be my baby no matter how tall you become!)

Do you keep mementos of how fast your kids grow up? Do you have height charts around your home too? Come share!

That’s one thing I regret not doing :( Maybe I can still start now. Anyway, Lucas is still 2 years old. :)

Go go! :) You can still totally start now. Or go look back at his baby book and see how tall he was when he was 1. Your pedia’s records will have that too! Then you can go mark it yourself on the wall. :)

Yay! That’s cool. I wanted to do this too for my girl but we keep on moving houses :( But I wish to start when we move to our new place soon! Lia’s just two also so it’s never too late!

Maybe you can do it on a piece of the home you can take with you anywhere you go. A wooden plank you can dress up (washi tape it? hehe)- you can just set it on the floor when it’s not needed or put it up as a decorative piece at home (just be sure it’s grounded solidly or nailed to the wall so it doesn’t tip over!).
