Gotcha, Mom!

My 3-year-old was taking an interest in my camera one evening. My knee-jerk reaction was to grab the camera from him for fear of him dropping it, but I went ahead and let him have a go at it anyway. I had to give him a chance. It was an awesome experience for both of us. Me, learning to trust him more and seeing the world from his eyes. Him, giggling at the new sights he could see through a lens. Here are some of his shots.

Timmy’s first subject was his Gronckle, from How to Train Your Dragon. He took so many pictures of his Gronckle from different angles, fuzzy shots and focused ones. He would even “feed” his Gronckle a penguin and then snap pictures. Unfortunately those turned out too blurry, but we’ll see if we can get a sharper shot next time!

These are a few of his favorite things. There’s me, fresh from having my hair treated. I had a whole bunch of shots which are best meant for family viewing only. Haha!

He took several pictures of our bedroom light. He was amazed at how the camera would adjust to the lighting, and that the moon and stars would come out. He was giggling all throughout.

His favorite Woody pillow was captured on cam too. Buzz didn’t make the cut.

Sounds like a film.

Other favorite subjects were animals from his toy collection. He would meticulously art direct the animals then snap pictures afterwards. After each shot, he’d lower his camera and give the animals an approving smile. Good job, toys!

Give a kid a camera and this is what you’ll get: lots of giggles, smiles and ooh’s and aah’s coming not just from the little boy but Mommy too! He’s been learning how to hold the camera properly. He now knows how to best position his little fingers without covering the lens. He even knows how to bend backwards or sideways to capture the shot that he likes. That’s with no coaching! That’s my budding photographer right there.

Experiment: Give your kid a camera and see what images he comes back with! It’s amazing what we discover through their eyes.
