Funny things my kid asked about pregnancy

by

My 6-year-old son is becoming more curious about how babies come to be. He saw an old picture of mine when I was still pregnant with him.

Timmy: “Mommy, is there a baby in your tummy?”

Me: “Yes!”

(silence from Timmy)

Timmy: “Mommy, did you eat the baby?”

Haha! I laughed out loud when he asked the question, then realized quickly he must have been embarrassed. Sorry, couldn’t help myself! I just said that he asked a very good question but no, I did not eat the baby.

Timmy: “Did the baby go out?”

Me: “Yes!”

(silence from Timmy)

Timmy: “Did you say ‘aaah’?” (opens his mouth wide)

Another almost-LOL moment for me. Where else would the baby come out right? 😉 I took a deep breath before answering him. “The doctor helped me bring the baby out!,” was all I said.

Timmy: “Mommy, did Daddy put the baby in your tummy?”

(silence from Mommy)

Timmy: “Mommy, did Daddy put Timmy baby in your tummy?”

(more silence from Mommy — I was trying to think about what to say!!!)

Me: “Yes! Daddy and Mommy prayed very hard to God so I could have a baby in my tummy. Then God gave us the baby! He put the baby in my tummy!”

This was true. 😉 We did pray very hard for our little miracle to arrive! (Read related blog post: Believe in Magic) Now I know Timmy will be asking for more details soon so I better brace myself for more probing questions!

I’m enjoying Timmy’s curiosity and wonder. I love the questions even though they take me by surprise. I love that we’re beginning to have these kinds of conversations. That’s why I try not to laugh too much so I don’t accidentally make him feel bad. 😛

Sometimes though I REALLY can’t help myself from laughing so hard.

Timmy was quietly observing his Dad, who was working on his laptop. Quietly, Timmy went over to his Dad.

“Daddy, you have a big tummy. Do you have a baby in your tummy?”

My husband’s face was hilarious. It was a cross between trying not to laugh and wanting to get angry and feeling sad. Timmy just started laughing too. I was literally rolling on the bed laughing. After I quieted down, we got to talking about how only Mommies can have babies in their tummies.

It also triggered my husband to go for a run the next morning.

I can’t wait for other questions Timmy will throw at us! This is just the beginning!!!

How do you handle your children’s questions about the birds and the bees? Do you tell them the biological truth of it? How do you feel when you answer them? Please share your experiences! I’d love to learn from them. I’m sure my son will be asking more probing questions soon!
