For Donna

by

How do you know?
I do not know.

But when death visits a loved one
and never leaves,
you wonder when he’ll be your visitor too.

And you hope he is beautiful.
And you hope he is kind.

And you hope he doesn’t startle you,
that he is familiar (but not too much),
familiar enough for you to realize

it is him,

sitting beside you,
an old friend who’s come to visit
who speaks no words
who reaches out
you walk with him
and
you
just know.

This is beautiful! In fact, it really affected me. It’s heartbreaking, and so many levels of quiet acceptance that is difficult to put to words…

hi toni. just had to blog hop today…

anyway, i love your poem. sometimes i wonder bwt these things, too. and i pray that mine (and my loved ones’) will be peaceful ones. and that we will, indeed, “just know.”. it is such a comforting poem, even if it talks about life’s harshest reality of all. thanks for sharing! take care.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful poem. Death is a reality that is difficult to accept in the beginning but life teaches us to be strong and to be ready. I like your poem very much. I also hope that when I finally come face to face with death, he will be kind and gentle. I just hope he gives me many more great years to spend with my loved ones. I hope that my loved ones who have passed away are now in blissful peace.
