Flashlight Games with Kids

by

Flashlight games are a great way to entertain kids! My 4-year-old and I enjoy flashlight games before bedtime. They’re not only fun, they make for great bonding time too. Here’s a list of games kids can play indoors with flashlights. Grab your flashlights and let’s play!

Fun Flashlight Games to Play Indoors

All you need for any flashlight game is a flashlight and your imagination. Here are some of the games my son and I enjoy playing together.

  • Flashlight Games: Can you find…
“I Spy” in the dark is extra fun! Turn out all the lights in a room. Settle in one corner of the bed. Arm your little boy with a flashlight. Then the fun begins! Call out items from around the room that he has to shine the light on.

Start with easy items like “Can you find the blue truck?” or “Where is the light switch!”. Then you can graduate to tougher-to-find items.

My only rule is he can’t leave the bed! Getting him out of bed will stimulate him again and he’ll have trouble falling asleep.

  • Flashlight Games: Free Play
This is probably my son’s favorite. I turn the light off in a room, making certain to first ensure he won’t trip over anything in the dark. Then he turns on the flashlight and just searches around the room. He gets a kick out of looking at his bookshelf in a new light (no pun intended). Also, under the bed.
  • Flashlight Games: Animal Shadows
This is a classic game. Make animal shapes with your hands. I can only make dogs and snakes. The rest are challenges. Timmy always asks me to make an elephant. Holy Dumbo. How do I do that?

Meanwhile, if you want to go beyond snakes and dogs like I do, we can get inspiration from this awesome performance by Raymond Crowe. Prepare to be amazed.

  • Flashlight Games: Guess My Shape
Draw a letter, shape or number on the ceiling or the wall while the other tries to guess it. If you want a challenge, draw an animal or an object. Great to play with three players. The first to guess the shape correctly gets the flashlight. Then it’s his turn to draw.
  • Flashlight Games: Chase the Light
You’ll need two flashlights for this. Try to let your child chase your flashlight’s beam around the room with his own light. Take turns chasing.

Lots of fun, right? It’s also a really good way to distract Timmy from gadget games, which he’s so into. Flashlight games take up a lot of his attention. They’re also a wonderful way to segue into bedtime.

What flashlight games do you play? Any tips for other indoor games? Come and share!

Aaaaand now I am reminded… That we don’t have a flashlight here at home. Not even one. Perhaps I should buy one, now that I have a better reason to do so. Hihi

Have one for emergencies! And make sure to have spare batteries.

Cool! Will even try this with our 1-year-old who refuses to sleep early and watch TV and just wants to play. Thanks Toni!

Perfect. Your one-year-old will definitely enjoy this. Warning lang: Kids love shining the lights in their faces and eyes, so a quick hand is needed to prevent that. Takot ako to damage eyesight kasi.
