Chinese Snacks In A Glass Jar

by

So you’ve seen my stash of snacks in a previous entry. If you pour out the contents of the jar, you’ll see they’re mostly dried and salted fruit. Ever heard of kiamoy and kana?

Chinese Snacks

On the upper left corner, that’s kana or dried olives. I love how they package kana here — three pieces are laid out on a strip of paper and they twist the paper to wrap up a single kana. So, ta-da! 3-in-1 Kana. On the upper right corner is another kind of packaging. Each triangle has 2 pieces of kana inside it.

On the lower left corner is one packaging for kiamoy. Each triangle holds 2 pieces of the dried salted prune. On the lower right corner is a kiamoy inside a piece of hardened candy. The sweetness of the candy is a great segue to the stark saltiness of the kiamoy. Woohoo! Sarap! This is a great way to rid oneself of “umay” after a long meal. I don’t know how “umay” translates in English, though.

Kana (Dried Olives), Kiamoy (Dried Salted Prunes) and Kiamoy Candy (Kiamoy in Candy)

So here’s what each one looks like up close. Kana, Kiamoy, and the Kiamoy Candy. I love taking a little bite into a piece of kiamoy and then taking a gulp of water afterwards. I also love champoy and dikiam but didn’t have any at the time I took this picture.

Of course we eat all this in moderation. These are salty food so we can’t really pig out too much on these treats!

Uy Kiamoy! I rarely have Chinese goodies anymore, but there were lots of small Chinese shops in Baguio, when I was a kid and we grew up with kiamoy, champoy, crystal candy (pure sugar in crystal form! bad for the teeth! hehehe). I’m not familiar with the kana though. Do you also have haw flakes?

Then there’s the shredded meat that I’ve tasted once before. Sarap din. What I did not like is the pickled ginger. It’s a lump of ginger that you munch into! Which makes me wonder how come I love Yoshinoya’s ginger appetizer these days.

i love kiamoy more than anything! im not so sure if they hav it in this part of china. what they usually offer us is this candy that looks and tastes similar to white rabbit… wrapper is also edible. it’s local beijing candy. really nice! parang mtira-tira na may chocnut sa loob ewan ko ba pero masarap sya.

Oh, I love kiamoy too! I also enjoy munching on champoy and sampaloc. my uncle brings home sweet sampaloc from bangkok that i really love. I haven’t tried Kana before. Sounds like a good treat. You’re right, they could be great “umay” busters.

Oh, drool!!! I fondly remember eating those snacks, especially champoy in our cafeteria at St. Louis in Baguio City. I still crave the salty morsel to this day – but alas, I can never seem to find the right one here in Texas! The packaging is very similar, but the insides are icky – I just end up throwing them away. But I will not be deterred, because I know that the one true champoy of my childhood is out there. Thanks for sharing, Toni!
