Birthday Surprise for my Boy

by

A birthday surprise for my son was one of the things I was looking forward to for most of his birthday month. He was turning 5 and was quite enthusiastic about it. It was a very special day. I stayed home from work. He could sleep in. Let the party planning begin!

At 4.45 am, I was up making a bunch of these streamers. The last time I put this skill of mine to use was high school, when we’d decorate our classrooms for Christmas or Valentine’s. As soon as I began folding strips of crepe paper together, I felt at ease. Making these streamers was surprisingly therapeutic!

Making Banners

I wanted Timmy to wake up to a bunch of streamers around the bed and around the house. Wouldn’t that be a wonderfully colorful way to start the day?

After making the streamers, my husband and I began blowing up balloons. Thank goodness for hand-held pumps. When the balloons were all ready, we scattered them around the bed. Then we decorated the stairs with streamers and balloons so Timmy could go down the stairs birthday-style.

The bedroom door was also decorated with strips of paper hanging from the top of the doorway! A curtain of crepe paper.

Birthday Love

Beside him on the bed, we lovingly displayed his favorite toys with balloons and streamers, plus a Happy Birthday greeting.

When Timmy woke up, he was super dazed. I think he wanted to go back to sleep but the colors called out to him. He sleepily reached for one balloon, then another, then looked at his cluster of toys with the birthday greeting. When he realized what was happening, he smiled broadly. “Happy birthday!,” I greeted my little 5-year-old

I think this is one of the things we forget about celebrating birthdays. The celebration starts the moment you wake up, and it helps to remind the birthday celebrant of that. :) I loved seeing Timmy’s reaction as he walked through the curtain of streamers on our bedroom door, then made his way down the balloon-and streamer-decked stairs. When he saw the “Happy Birthday” banner at the foot of the stairs, it cemented the fact for him that this day was like no other day!

The long balloons delighted him. He pulled one towards his nose and said, “I’m an elephant! *insert elephant sound here*” Such joy! Then he sat in a circle of balloons and streamers and played with his toys.

Around the house, I also experimented with some animal balloons. Okay, fish balloons. Haha, it was the only animal I could make. They doubled as hats during our birthday lunch.

My friends from LEAP were so thoughtful! A few days before Timmy’s birthday, my coach asked me what he’s into. “Anything Avengers,” I shared. A day before his birthday, she gave me a box of delicious Avengers cupcakes for Timmy’s special day!

For his birthday lunch, I nestled the cupcakes in a bunch of blue and yellow crepe streamers for that birthday feel. My sister also baked a super delicious chocolate cake for Timmy!

So much love for our little boy on his 5th birthday. The rest of the day was filled with opening of presents, enjoying his presents, and a bunch of other happy activities.

“Mission: Wake Up to a Birthday Surprise” was a success! This is an activity I’d love to replicate for my husband and my son next year. I’m so excited! The morning birthday surprise will now be part of my family’s tradition. <3
