Basil Ice Cream from Jack Frost

by

Basil ice cream? It can’t be that bad. It MUST be delicious. I MUST taste it!

That’s what was in my thought balloon as I came upon basil ice cream at the Ultimate Taste Test a few weeks ago. The merchant’s name was Jack Frost, and they were giving samples of their artisanal ice cream. My sisters opted for Nuts & Roses (rose with pistachio nuts), and I chose Basil. There was no question that Jack Frost would get a 5 out of 5 for their Basil Ice Cream. It was just phenomenal. I loved how doubly comforting it was — comforting as an ice cream, comforting as an herb. Really. It sounds weird, but it’s one of those foods you just HAVE to try before saying no to it. 😉

Thanks to social media, I got to connect with the owner of Jack Frost on Twitter and Facebook! Upon learning that fresh stocks of Basil Ice Cream would be delivered to DEC in Wilson St., San Juan, I made arrangements to make sure we would drop by the store! I needed my dose of Basil Ice Cream!

Bonkers about Basil Ice Cream

How does it taste? Just like basil. With cream. And cold. It’s like pesto, but creamy and not oily. It’s hard to describe, but there is this word that captures it very well: Refreshing.

At DEC, it was sold for P275 per pint. It’s quite pricey, yes? It’s a good indulgence though. I feel a thrill of delight every time I eat it. Love, love, love.

Not everyone’s a fan of it though. My Mom said, “It’s not for me.” My sisters don’t think the basil ice cream is bad, but prefer Nuts & Roses. Me? I’m loving this. My Dad’s reaction was funny.

I had prepared a cone of basil ice cream for myself and chanced upon him in the living room. “You want? Basil ice cream,” I offered. “You might find it weird,” I added a disclaimer.

He took the cone from me, tasted the ice cream, and made a face. “Saan mo ‘to nakuha?” (Where did you get this?)

I answered, “Binili ko.” (I bought it). Then he took another bite of the ice cream. “You like it?”

He nodded his head, and kept eating the ice cream.

I went back to the kitchen to get myself another cone. By the time I got back to the living room, he had finished his basil ice cream. 😛

You can eat this on its own, but I find that it’s extra yummy when eaten on a cone. The hint of sweetness from the crunchy cone compliments the creaminess of the basil ice cream perfectly.

My Basil Ice Cream Indulgence

An herb in an ice cream? Why not? I’m thinking of topping my scoop of basil ice cream with some shaved cheese next time. Weird? Weirdly comforting. Come give it a try!

Learn more about Jack Frost Premium Ice Cream at their Facebook page. They have a menu for all their flavors too. I’ll try the Energo next time (Milo with pop rocks!) and Lemon Mint! And of course, I’ll go get myself another pint of this slightly unusual but totally comforting basil ice cream.
