Potty Training in 3 Days: Lessons from Lora Jensen

by

A week before I went back to corporate world (Feb 2013), I was panicking. My son wasn’t potty-trained yet. He was 3 years and 5 months old. He still pooped and peed in his nappy, and I was feeling the pressure because I was going back to work in 7 days. I was anxious because I felt he was late in the potty training world. Didn’t everyone’s kids get potty-trained at 2 years old? It seemed like it at that time. My son hit 3 and wasn’t showing that many signs of potty-training readiness.

But man, how do I potty-train my kid in 7 days? Could it even be done?

It could. Would you believe I potty-trained him in just 3 days? Believe it! My cousin recommended Lora Jensen’s book “3-Day Potty Training”. Lora Jensen is also known as the “Potty Training Queen.” Her book was such a quick and encouraging read. It shared tips and advice on how to potty train your child in yep, just 3 days.

Her method involves a guardian’s full commitment and attention to the child. For 3 days, your routine will be broken. Your schedule will revolve around the child. It’s very trying, but it’s so worth it. In a nutshell, your child has to go without diapers for those 3 days. No cheating! It’s like potty training cold-turkey style. So you bet your butt those 3 days with me and Timmy were quite messy. You’d have to be by your child’s side most of the time, with me telling him “Let Mommy know when you have to peepee in the potty, ok?” We had accidents. There was pee and poop on the floor the first days. But I’m telling you, just keep at it, and keep finding inspiration and assurance in Lora Jensen’s book – you and your child will get there!

He was indeed potty-trained in just 3 days. I think there was an accident on the 7th day, but it was pretty smooth-sailing from there. I was amazed! Her method is love-filled so I didn’t mind the difficulty in the beginning at all. Hey, we got what we wanted on the third day!

Lora’s technique covers both potty training during waking time and sleeping time. My son’s covered when it comes to waking time, but I still put him in nappies during bedtime just in case of accidents. He’s 4 years old now. I do take extra care to avoid peepee in the evenings (e.g. no liquids close to bedtime), but he still wets his nappy sometimes. So instead of interrupting his sleep, I let him sleep through the night. I know I should be stricter when it comes to potty training him during sleeping time. He’s becoming drier and drier anyway, so soon we’ll say a complete goodbye to nappies. I’m crossing my fingers! But follow Lora Jensen’s techniques for potty training even during sleeping time. It will work better for you and your child!

I was super happy Timmy was potty trained by the time I went back to full-time work. Going nappy-free for most of the day is a big step to being a big boy! ☺ I also have to admit it’s a big load off parents’ shoulders (and wallets) when we say goodbye to nappies!

ooh, I should try this out! Aria is 2.5 and I wouldn’t mind if she gets rid of her diapers once and for all.
